I couldn't describe the mixed emotions I had inside of me; angry at Kurt for acting like such an idiot, compassionate for Reese and hoping that Sebastian's going to live, and annoyed at how secretive these doctors were being about his stats. Why should imediate family only have these details? Why can't imediate friends have them too? Well...I'm not an imediate friend...but I'm Reese's bestfriend and she's his girlfriend so that should count for something.
Kurt walked into the hotel room we were sharing, while I just sat on my bed and read the book he gave me for christmas. I was punishing his actions with the silent treatment. Sure, he would have to apologize, but not to me. To Reese and Sebastian.
"Hey, I just got back from the hospital. Sebastian is still out like a light but...you just got to have faith." he said. I met his eyes for a brief second before turning back to my book. Kurt sighed.
"Rachel, that's enough with the silent treatment. You want to hear me say sorry again for probably the hundreth time? Then here: I'm sorry."
"It's not me you have to say you're sorry to. You know damn well who needs to hear you say that." I said.
"You want me to apologize to a skateboarding clothing designer whose on the cusp of an anxiety attack, and a kid in a coma?" he asked. I closed my book and gave him a look.
"When he wakes up genius. And he will wake up, just you wait and see." I said before opening my book again. But now I was just pretending to read. Kurt reached into his bag and pulled out an envelope.
"I asked Hunter to email these to me so I could look at them." in the envelope were the pictures that started this whole mess in the first place.
"Why? You going to draw on his face and cut her out of the pictures?" I asked him.
"No, I...put the book down please and listen to me." he took my book and sat down next to me, showing me the pictures.
"I wanted to be able to understand how someone like Sebastian could change his ways because of Reese? But I looked at these pictures, one by one, and I saw it." he said.
"What did you see?" I asked. Kurt pulled out the picture of them meeting in the park.
"Notice the way he looks at her? That's the way Blaine looks at me, and it's the same way Finn used to look at you." he was right, Sebastian looks at Reese with love and compassion, something she's needed for a long time now. "And if I remember correctly, that's all Reese has ever wanted. Someone to look at her like that. And here he is, doing exactly that." he said.
"He makes her happy in ways that you and I probably could never understand, but that's the price we pay for friendship: we have to accept one another." I said.
"What is it about her though? What does Reese have that made Sebastian want to be the good guy?" he asked. I gave Kurt a flat look.
"What?" oh boy.
"She challenges him. The day she went to confront him at Dalton, that practically sealed their fate. She brings him this new obstacle he has to overcome, therefore he can on top like he usually wants. But when it comes to Reese, an ambitious go-getter who doesn't take any crap from anyone, he doesn't mind sharing the prize. He fell in love with her, because he found someone who is exactly like him, but with a preference for right instead of wrong. And slowly, she guided him to being a wonderful man. Reese, let me tell you can be a load of work, but she's smart, and she's compassionate, and she's beautiful, and she accepts Sebastian, even with all his faults. That's what true love is about, forgiveness. And I think after about two years, you should forgive Sebastian for what he's done." I said.
"You really think I should?" he asked.
"He's different now. The Sebastian we first met two years ago, is not the same one we know now. He's kind, and he cares. And if he screws something up, Reese'll be there to help him clean it up. She's like his guardian angel." I replied.
" If he didn't change, he wouldn't have defended Reese like that from Hunter. When Sebastian wakes up, the first thing I'm going to say to him is...'I'm sorry'."
Reese's POV
This law firm building is really fancy...also confusing. And I thought Dalton was nuts, this place is definetely fancier than any building in Lima -- no -- Ohio!
The receptionist directed me to Richard Smythe's office, she didn't even question if I had an appointment. They should really hire some better help.
Richard was at his desk, rapidly scribbling on sheets of paper, maybe like subpeonas or something for court. I knocked on the door fram three times before he looked up.
"Reese, do we have an appointment?" he asked, looking very confused. I would so love to smack this guy...in the face...with a chair.
"No sir, I'm actually here about your son." I said as I stepped inside, a folder tucked neatly in my arms.
"Is he dead?" Richard asked.
"No, no, he's still hanging on. The police called me this morning. They found the man who hit Sebastian and hauled him in. This is all his personal information and other crime related stuff that I couldn't really understand. I thought you might want it, you know, if you want to press charges against this man." I replied, holding out the folder. Richard looked at the folder, then at me, than took it.
"Thank you Reese, this'll come in handy. I'll tell Lenore you said hello." he said, meaning this conversation was over. I was about to leave, but something told me I shouldn't. I still had a lot to say to him.
"You know Mr. Smythe, I haven't seen you at the hospital yet. I see your wife all the time, but not you." I said.
"Reese, just because I don't visit my son in the hospital does not mean that I'm not worried sick about him. But I still have a job to do, and it distracts me from anything else." he replied.
"Anything else? Is that what your family is to you? Anything else?" I asked. Richard stopped and looked at me.
"I don't understand what accusation you're about to make, but I'd choose my words very carefully if I were you Ms. Lavek." he said.
"I'm mean, you don't love your family. You don't love your sweet and adoring wide, and your amazing son. You don't really care if Sebastian lives or dies, as long as you still have a job, right?" I asked.
"Now wait a minute young lady-"
"No, no you wait. I'm not finished! I look at you Richard, and I don't like what I see." I said.
"What do you see, exactly?" he asked.
"A man who's shut everybody out of his life. A man who's too cowardly to feel love because all it does is break. Well it doesn't, as long as you fight for it. And that's what a lot of good people do every day. But when it comes to people like you, you believe more in making a living and avoiding hardships, just so your family can survive. But what's the point if you ignore them? And then pretty soon, they're going to start ignoring you back. You will sit here, night and day, while the world changes, and moves on. It's not gonna wait for you. And then one day, you're gonna wake up and find yourself completely alone. With nobody who wants to be around you. You're wife would leave you, and your son would run away. You would have nobody." I said, very proud of the words that came out.
Richard remained quiet, still keeping his gaze fixed on me.
"I know right now, you want to call security or something. You won't have to, because I'm gonna leave, and I don't need no damn escort. But before I go, let me leave you with this: five hundred million dollars in bills are printed per day, that's over a hundred thousand per year. But all that money can't buy you the love of your family, or anyone else for that matter. You should open your eyes and see that, before it's too late."
