THREE YEARS EARLIER

Harry’s POV

I walked down the hall of my school with my group of friends when I noticed a girl I had never seen before. She had beautiful brown wavy hair and lovely brown eyes.

She turned and noticed me, smiling brightly. I grinned back shyly and turned back to my friends, messing my curls with my hand.

I sat down in my first class and sure enough, the new girl sat down next to me.

“Hi! I’m Cher.” She said with a confidence I had never seen in anyone before.

“Harry.” I said smiling at her.

“Well, Harry,” She said with a coy smile. “I’m new here and I’m looking for someone to show me the ropes of this place and I think you’re my guy.”

I attempted to process what she was saying.

“Help a girl out and let her sit with you at lunch so I don’t have to, I don’t know. Eat in the bathroom stall all by myself like I did on my first day at my last school.” Cher said with an eye roll and a smile.

“Of course.” I said, unsure of anything else to say.

“Unless, of course, you’re friends are lame.” She teased.

“No!” I said defensively. “My friends are great.”

“Good.” She said with a satisfied look. “I like you, Harry.”

I tried to figure out what that meant, but got distracted by the teacher walking in and starting roll call.

Cher sat with me at lunch that day, and every other day that week. In fact, Cher was at every lunch with me for the rest of my lunches at Carter.

Cher was always by my side, because “I was showing her the ropes”, but she was a quick learner. Soon, it became companionship and I grew to like and even yearn for her presence. She was like no one else I had ever met, and I loved her energy.

I started to think that I was falling for her, and one night when we were hanging out and I gathered the courage to make a move.

We were sitting on my bed watching a movie on my laptop, and she was snuggled in close to me.

I saw my shot and I took it. I leaned in and pressed my lips cautiously to hers and it backfired, big time.

Cher pushed me off saying, “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Sorry, sorry.” I mumbled feeling my cheeks burn.

Cher laughed a little and I gave her a look.

“Sorry! I’m not laughing at you, I’m…it’s just that I…I’m not…into guys.”

I stared at her speechless.

“By that you mean…” I said, slowly understanding what she was getting at.

“I like girls.” Cher said nodding slowly.

“Well this is awkward.” I said, running my fingers through my curls.

“It’s nothing against you.” She said trying to make me feel better, but it wasn’t working. “It’s just…wrong equipment?” She said bursting out laughing.

“Oh come on, it helps if you laugh about it.” Cher said when I continued to just stare at her. “Look, I get that it comes as a shock. I’ve only just come out to my parents, and they’re still trying to fully grasp it. I understand if you don’t want to be my friend anymore, also.”
