I drove my old beat up truck back to my ranch; the truck was a black Chevy Silverado 1500.  My horse Ladies Love Country Boys, stood at the fence when I pulled he’s a bay purebred quarter horse gelding. He is one of my two horses, Ladies Love Country Boys is his registered name, I always call him Cowboy.  I pulled into the drive way, I parked and hopped out.

I went in my house and went towards the kitchen. A large dog began to bark, my black lab Bo ran out of the kitchen towards me. He jumped on my putting his huge paws on my stomach.

“Good morning to you to Bo,” I laughed.

He barked in reply and got off of me. His big wet nose went to the ground looking for something.

“whatcha doin’ bud?”  I asked him, suddenly he jumped and ran after a dark furry thing. He pounced on it and grabbed it. He trotted over to me and held the mouse in his mouth to me as a gift. I took it from him and scratched the top of his head.

I went to the door and dropped the mouse on the ground outside the door.

“good boy, Bo,” I said ruffling his fur as I walked past him.

His tongue hung out of his mouth as he followed me into the kitchen.

I reached in the fridge and pulled out a big carrot and a piece of cooked rabbit. I threw the bit of rabbit at Bo, he jumped up and caught it in mid air. I went back outside and walked over to the barn, Bo right on my heels. I heard my other horse’s nickers by the time I got to the barn door. She stood in her stall, her almost white head hanging over the door looking at me. That’s my Kinda Night is my other horse, a palomino quarter horse with a broad blaze running down her face. She bobbed her head as I walked closer to her. I reached her gait and stretched my hand out to pet her nose.

A large silver Ford came up my drive and pulled in near the barn. I stuffed the carrot I still had in my boot and walked to the truck. Mr. Baker stepped out, I went up to him.

“Why, Mr. baker! What a pleasure to see you!” I laughed coming up to him, my smile soon slid off my face when I saw the frown on his.

“Ms. Scott, I’m sorry to say this but, your parents, they passed on a few days ago…” Mr. Baker said.

My heart stopped… my parents, they were dead…

“H-how?” I stuttered.

“Alex they were in a crash, a semi was coming down the road and hit them head on, I’m sorry,” he said.

“What ‘bout their ranch in the country up there?” I asked

“They wrote in their will that it was all to be given to you, their house goes to danny, you brother, but you get the ranch and all the stuff in it.”

“But I can’t move up there!” I exclaimed

“You don’t have to move up there, they only had 6 horses, you have a six horse trailer, just sell the ranch up there and bring all the horses and stuff back down here.”

“Ok ill do that,”

He put a hand on my shoulder, “I best be going now, good luck,” and with that he went back to his truck and left.

My brother, I had to call him. I ran back to my house that stood a little ways awau from the barn and grabbed the phone off its hook. I dialed his cell number, not caring if he was in class or not.

It rang twice and he picked up

“Alex? Sis is that you?” he whispered.

“Yea it’s me, Danny you need to come by my place, asap,” I rasped my voice catching.
