WINTER 1000
I wake up to find the ship has stopped moving so violently as it did last night.
Dim light filters through the curtains. The other side of the bed is empty and cold. I get out, clean up and put some clothes on before heading outside.
It is still cloudy and cold outside. A light rain falls on the deck of the ship. As far as I can see, we are in the middle of nowhere. The ocean stretches out onto every direction. We should be in Cair Paravel by now. How far did the storm throw us off course?
Not wanting to get wet again I decide to get some breakfast before finding out where we are.
I open the door to the quarters we use to have our meals and meetings in to find Peter and Edmund having breakfast there.
"Hey, good morning guys," I say closing the door behind me.
"Good morning," Peter replies.
"Morning Imira. How was your night?" Edmund asks.
"Sorry, what?" I reply stunned by the question. Peter didn't tell him, did he?
"How'd you sleep with the storm? Thunder kept waking me up. Made it hard to sleep," Edmund elaborates.
"Oh, the storm. Yes. The thunder woke me up too. Ended up going out to the deck and getting soaked in seawater. I stayed up until late," I reply. Peter smiles smugly at that last bit.
I pour myself a cup of water and sit down in front of them. "So, anyone knows where we are?" I ask them both as I examine the food that lays in front of me.
"Just east of Cair Paravel," Peter informs me.
"Really? So fast? I thought we were returning to Doorn." I say.
"We were, but the storm threw us west instead of north like we thought it would, we actually ended up closer than we anticipated," Peter explains.
"Well, that's convenient. Anyways, I can't wait to get back home. I miss dry land." I say taking a bite of my breakfast.
"So tell me, what happened last night? Any damage to the ship?" I inquire.
"Nah, the ship's fine. She's as tuff as they come." Edmund answers cheerfully.
"Good to hear."
Within four hours we arrive at Cair Paravel. We find Susan, Lucy and Peridan at the docks and return to the castle with them. They give us updates on what's been happening since we were away.
"Some of the witch's allies were seen in the woods, Peridan and I took care of them while Lucy stayed here," Susan tells us.
Peter gives Peridan a pointed look.
"Hey, I tried to stop her, but the Queen was determined," Peridan tells Peter.
"I'm sure she was," Peter says.
"I wasn't going to wait around for you boys to get back. I can handle myself," Susan says.
"I'm sure you can Sue," Peter tells her. "I suppose everything went fine."
"Oh, yes. We nearly killed them all. Still, we've been getting rumours. A werewolf here, a hag there. It'll take some time, but I'm sure eventually we'll get them all." Susan says.
"I'm sure we will," Peter replies.
And so it's back to normal, at least for a while. We go back to training and meetings and lessons and council sessions. I really love adventure, but I've got to say, I missed this. Peace, prosperity, security, stability; they're all great things to have. Nothing lasts forever, but as long as it lasts I'll be sure to enjoy it.
