Daysi, Arielle, Dr.Turner, and a nurse speed-walked down five flights of stairs, and down a cold, empty hallway.
"Is there no elevator?"
"Exercise is good for your heart." Arielle rolled her eyes and whispered, "Damn doctors."
They stopped in front of two large doors with a red light at the top. Dr.Turner flipped a few pages on his clipboard, and explained the circumstances.
He eyed Daysi when he spoke, "He's your son, I believe." Daysi nodded, and the doctor continued, "He is in surgery at the moment. He wasn't hit as hard as the other two, but he has lost a large amount of blood. He flew through the back windshield on impact, since he was in the middle back seat, and wasn't wearing a seat belt. The nurses and surgeons are doing their best. Since you are a relative, you will be let in once they say it is okay."
Dr.Turner then looked at Arielle and spoke, although she already knew what he'd say, "For you Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait outside."
Arielle sighed and sat in one of the two empty, blue chairs outside the door. "I understand."
For a second, the light above the door flashed green apparently signalling that they could enter, but the procedure wasn't over.
Dr.Turner looked at Daysi with concern. "Ma'am, there will be a lot of blood. If you cannot handle it, i suggest you-"
Daysi stood firm with determination. "I want to see my son." The doctor nodded.

When they entered the room, many people in masks were huddled speaking in whispered tones. Daysi immediately ran to Will's side on the bed where he was layed out and surrounded by silver tools. He was awake. She could tell by his uneven breathing, but his eyes were closed. The machine monitor beeped showing Will's heart rate was dangerously low.
Daysi grabbed Will's left hand. It was terribly calloused from all the times he spent outside playing football. As she rubbed her thumb against Will's palm with tears rushing down her face, his eyes fluttered and opened slightly. When he turned his head toward his mother, he smiled and weakly uttered, "Hi Mom. Guess what? The 49ers won."
Daysi laughed softly, and wiped her face with the back of her hand. "I told you they wo-"
BEEEEP BEEEEP BEEP-BEEP BEEEEEEEEEP
Will's pulse suddenly fell flat. Daysi fell into shock as people in blue scrubs shoved her away to get to Will's side. Every nurse, surgeon, and doctor spoke in raised, but confident, voices.
Female voice- "He's losing too much blood." When the woman lifted the sheet off of Will, Daysi saw the long, wide gash that spread from mid-thigh to mid-shin. The wound bled length wise, and in some parts it was deep enough to expose bone. Daysi had to turn away or else she'd barf.
Different female voice- "He has no pulse!"
Male voice- "Let's start at 300 volts."
Second female voice- "CLEAR."
The sound of the electric shock played through Daysi's ears in slow motion. What happened in mere seconds felt long and agonizing.
Same male voice- "Still no pulse. Go again."
First female voice- "500 volts."
