Suicide.It isn't possible.
He promised that he would help.
Why would he promise to help me if he was planning on dying beforehand?
It just doesn't make any sense.
I laced mum's fingers with mine. I feel bad for just wearing my uniform, but I could never afford a suit and I wasn't able to find a suit, amongst all the client's clothes, as my frame was too small.
"Our Arthur Park was a brilliant boy... Always getting top grades in his class and making his parents proud. He loved sports and was particularly skilled in every sport he played. His parents recalled the last time he played crick-". What a load of baloney! This damned priest knows nothing about Arthur; he's only mentioning the obvious! We all know he was good at everything but what about his past?!
I guess, only I remember it.
Both of us are sitting outside the library. My SATs are coming up and with the unremarkable social lives we have, we spend most of our time at the library reading textbooks and working on assignments. He's been my best friend since I can remember- nothing could separate us. Apart from appearance, we're both very similar. He's chubby and I'm skinny.
"Hey, do you want to come back to mine later! We can play on the 'X-GO' that my dad got for me."Arthur fidgeted with excitement, probably as it is a limited edition games console.
"I would, but-"
"Victor. It's Victor isn't it. I can't believe that he's even stopping you from going out now. Why don't you just come live with us and change to my school?"
"He'd still find me and I can't leave mum... She's going blind." I pressed my foot into the curb, partially destroying the sole of my shoe.
"Then she can come too!"
"Thanks Arty, but if Victor found out about you, he'd probably come after you too, and you already have enough on your plate."
"Then we'd fight him together!"
"We'd still have no chance."
"So pessimistic. When I get big and muscular I'm going to be your knight in shining armor- just you wait!"
"I'm not a girl!!"
"You might as well be." I couldn't tell if he was joking or not, but I know I'm weak. However, it's a sensitive subject and I'd prefer not to talk about it.
A few years later, when Arthur had turned 16 and I was 14, he still remembered the offer that he made back then.
"Hey, I wasn't joking about the offer of you coming to live with me and my dad. You know how dangerous Victor is." His hands were grubby from trying to fix the sink's broken pipe in mum's kitchen.
"Mum's eyesight has gotten even worse; I don't want to worry her, so it's best that I stay there. My mum's pretty smart, you know. She'd easily figure out that something was wrong if I moved."
"Okay. However, this is the last time I'll ask because I'm going to move away for a couple of weeks. But when I come back, I'll beat up that stupid Victor kid."
"Sure you will." I laughed, but deep down we know I'm desperate for someone to save me from this hell...
Apart from a couple of stragglers, I'm the only one left. Standing, pointlessly at the foot of my cousin's grave.
