Sometimes I wonder. I wonder what would've my life been like if I hadn't looked out the window. Maybe a lot of lives wouldn't have been lost. Maybe I could've grown up, my mind unscathed. And potentially...stopped a war from ever beginning.
Nevertheless, I had made the mistake of looking outside to the window. If I was a normal person, I would've shrugged it off and say that my mind was playing tricks on me.
However, something in my gut told me this was no trick of the mind.
As I approached I could see it clearer. Two teens, probably around the age of fifteen we're blasting lights at each other.
Let me correct myself, one of them was blasting light. Red light. Just by looking at it, it made me feel nauseous.
While the other one seemed to be blasting wind to the other's direction.
The one who was blasting red light was tall, probably Caucasian, his eyes were a shade of dark red. They shone with power and greed. His face was marred by a scar that spread across his face like a snake slithering through grass.
While the other one was a bit shorter, had a toffee brown complexion. Her eyes were the color of persian blue as they shined determination. Her curly cinnamon colored hair bounced around her face as she took a step back and shouted something indistinct.
A whistle snapped me out of staring. I glanced over and saw Jasper standing next to me, watching the scene unfold as well.
"You're... You're seeing this, r-right?" He asked nervously as his eyes said Am I going crazy? He was rubbing his elbows. His nervous habit.
All I could do was nod. For once in my life I had no words within me.
Suddenly the window crashed. Pieces of glass started flying everywhere. If it hadn't been for Jasper's reflexes, I would've been killed. He quickly tackled me down, getting me out of range of the fight but not the little glass shards.
Little pieces of glass flew down on the ground and pierced my limbs, despite that, I couldn't feel the pain.
Voices filled the room as I stiffly lay there, frozen by fear. Even though I knew I should have moved, I just couldn't. Every muscle in my body betrayed me and left me motionless.
"I won't let you hurt them, Taye!" Shouted a female voice. Her words were tainted with betrayal and anger.
A laugh that resembled wheezing interrupted her, "And let them be pawns as well? Face it, Breeze, the Spirits are just using us! Might as well stop them from ever facing that."
I slightly looked up and the boy, who was supposedly Taye, was grinning at me. A sphere of swirling red light formed in his hand, "Don't worry, I'll make it quick."
Suddenly something quick body slammed into him and tackled him down.
It was the girl, who must've been Breeze. She pressed the dull end of her spear against his neck. She made a hissing sound at him and pressed the spear a little bit more tighter against Taye.
The boy instantly began trying to fight back and they immediately engaged into a duel.
Even though it was probably the stupidest move you can make during an event like this, I still unsteadily stood up and yelled, "Hey!"
Both the girl and the boy turned their heads to me and I instantly felt my courage drain from me. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, "Can we stop fighting and talk about what is going on?!"
Taye smirked, "Sure..we can talk but...." The guy trailed off.
I frowned, "But?"
"If only she would take the spear away from my neck. Then maybe we could talk." He said with such calmness, I almost believed him.
Breeze glowered at his words, "Don't trust any of these traitor's words! He is trying to deceive you just like what he did with Ro..." She stopped herself and shook her head. "Just don't trust what he says."
Well that's enough to convince me. Though, I decided I wanted to attack the elephant in the room once again.
"Why are you here?" I clenched my fists, preparing myself for the answer.
Taye, instead of answering straightforwardly, answered with a simple, "I thought he warned you."
Suddenly I felt Jasper stand up behind me, "I think he did."
He walked up to them. I just stared at him in awe. How could he have so much courage going up to these powerful filled people?
He crouched down next to the tackled traitor and uttered so softly I could barely hear it, "And I think you should go back where you came from."
All of the sudden, some black colored roots grew rapidly from the cracks of the floor, reaching and wrapping themselves around the limbs of Taye.
Breeze and Jasper backed away from the root covered traitor. Cracks in the floor spreaded towards him. With his shouts and his protests, the ground leisurely swallowed him. His whole form melting into the earth.
All I could do was stare. What the heck just happened. That was unimaginably scary.
I glanced over at Jasper with my jaw wide open. "How...?" I whispered.
Jasper had a scared expression. "I.... don't know...I just thought of him as dirt and that's where he belongs... But-"
"You must be a child of the Spirits," the girl abruptly interrupted. Her Persian blue eyes were studying both of us.
"You must come with me."
"Woah, woah," I put my hands up to emphasize my point. "First of all, ever heard of stranger danger? And second of all, we just knew you for like 20 seconds! Do you you think we'll go with some stranger?"
She raised her eyebrows at me, "I am no stranger to you if you acquired my name through conflict."
I was about to protest but then Jasper interrupted, "She's right. She obviously knows what's going on, we don't. So are you coming or not?"
That was definitely out of character for Jas. He barely ever trusted strangers.
However, wanting to stay with my only friend I instead pursed my lips and nodded.
I didn't like this idea at all.
"Then we must hurry," Breeze had a sense of urgency in her tone. "They're coming."
Well that was reassuring. I hurriedly followed as soon as the both of them escaped out of school. It was difficult keeping up Jas and Breeze.
Curse my small legs!
