Chapter 9
'Millie...' Finn started, but she averted her eyes from him and looked back at the TV, hearing the next words.
"Was he afraid of working with Oscar-winning director? Or is it something more than that? Let's not forget the time when he turned down the role a few years ago because he didn't want to have a long distance relationship with his girlfriend Millie Bobby Brown. Maybe history had come full circle and his relationship got in the way for the second time?
Well, whatever it was, it's a shame we won't see Wolfhard teaming up with Wallace. It would be great to see him performing the role of James, young and careless musician who has to quickly grow up because of his rough relationship with his older brother. He's also fascinated by a girl from his hometown who shows no interest in him. It is confirmed that the role of Sofia, twenty years old artist..."
Millie reached for the remote and turned the TV off. She had heard enough.
She still didn't even look at him, her eyes glued to the TV, even though it was just a black, empty screen now. She had a thousand questions that needed answers, but none of them seemed right to ask. She settled for the most simple one.
'Is it true?' she asked finally.
Okay. Maybe it's just a joke. Or maybe they were wrong. It was a gossip channel, after all. They were making things up all the time.
He sighed deeply. He didn't want her to find out about it. And if so...
Not like that, that's for sure.
'Yes.' he said simply.
So it wasn't a joke, they weren't wrong, they didn't make this up. It was her last bit of hope, but he took it away from her, saying only one word.
She finally looked at him. The realization hit her when she noticed the sadness in his eyes, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place. His changed behavior, his tiredness, his conversation with Jack... Or this time when he went on the terrace and she comforted him...
'So that's why you've been like this lately.' she said quietly.
'Like what?' he asked cautiously.
'I don't know... Different. Quiet. Upset.' she said.
He didn't know what to say. He knew that she noticed that something was off, that he was acting unlike himself, but she didn't push him further and he was grateful for that.
Besides, he was too worried about her. He kind of forgot to focus on himself or to hide his real emotions. It was hard for him to keep it from her, it didn't matter that he is an actor. He felt really bad for lying, but... He just didn't want to worry her. He didn't want to make her sad over the fact that her boyfriend is upset. He knew he'll get over it someday, trying to convince himself that it isn't a big deal, that this role isn't that important.
He just wanted to pretend that everything's alright, hoping that one day... Maybe... It really will be alright. Just... He forgot that she knew everything about him, he forgot how well she knew him.
He forgot that life isn't that simple.
It was unnerving that he couldn't read anything from her face. She was looking at him like she didn't recognize him, like he was completely different person. He heard her faint voice.
