I stood by my car as my friends and I were saying goodbye and hugging after going out to lunch. Suddenly, a car came to a screeching stop nearby and Ricky came running out of the backseat, not bothering to close the door. He practically threw himself at me, grabbing my arm and spinning me around to face him.
"Ricky?" I asked, bewildered.
"Why the hell don't you answer your phone?" He snapped at me, a bit breathy.
"What do you mean?"
"I called you six times and you never picked up! You almost gave me a goddamn heart attack!" He was getting worked up and I noticed his eyes were red.
"Ricky, I'm okay." I said. "Have you been crying?"
He finally calmed down enough to speak normally. Ricky nodded before pulling me against him. "I was so scared when you didn't answer my calls. All I could think about was what happened last time." He buried his face in my neck as one of my friends asked "What happened last time?"
I turned my head to her, held in my place by Ricky's grasp. "I got shot." My friends were taken aback at my nonchalant comment. I held Ricky and stroked his hair to help calm him down. After he had calmed down enough, he pulled away and took my hand in his, leading me to Chris's car. I leaned down to see Chris in the driver's seat.
"You should've seen him on the way here," he said. "He was freaking out and looked like he might snap at any moment. You really scared him. Don't do it again."
I nodded. "I won't." I felt a pang of guilt as I saw Chris's sympathetic look towards Ricky.
"Alright, well I gotta get going," Chris said. "Take care of him. He's still a bit shaken. I'll see you guys later." He drove away and I turned to Ricky.
"I'm really sorry," I said, kissing the back of his hand. "I didn't mean to scare you. My phone died about an hour ago."
"You should've used someone else's phone," he suggested. "Anything to let me know you were okay."
"I know," I said, looking down. By this time, it was only us two in the parking lot. My friends had left a few minutes before. Ricky placed two fingers under my chin and raised my eyes to meet his. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine, placing one hand on my cheek, the other still holding mine.
After a few moments, we broke for air and I looked him in the eye. His blue irises were surrounded by a light pink from him crying earlier. He noticed my observation and gave me a small smile. "I'm okay, baby," he said quietly. I nodded, but still looked away. He brought my face up to his again and gently kissed my forehead, pulling me into his arms. "Let's go home," he whispered against my skin. I nodded and we got in my car before going back to my apartment.
We got inside and I noticed Ricky's tight grip on my hand. I led him to our bedroom and laid down, him laying beside me and laying his head on my chest, listening to my heartbeat. I ran my fingers through his hair and we remained quiet for a while before Ricky spoke.
"I know you feel guilty for scaring me, but seriously, I'm okay," he propped himself on his elbow and leaned forward, kissing my lips lightly.
