I was working on writing a song in my living room when my phone lit up with Ricky's name. I answered, a bit concerned when I heard a harsh cough from his end.

"Hey sweetheart," I said. "What's up?"

He sniffled before answering. "Can you come over? I'm sick." His voice sounded nasally and strained.

"Yeah sure," I said, standing. "I'll be over as soon as I can." I hung up and went to the kitchen, finding a bottle of cold medicine and some saltine crackers. I drove to his house and used the key he gave me to unlock the door.

I heard him sneeze upstairs in his room and went upstairs to see the door open. He sat up in his bed with his blanket wrapped around him like a cape and several blankets around him. His face was sickly pale, his eyes tired, and his nose red. He weakly reached out to me as I walked over to the bed, sitting beside him. He immediately shuffled closer to me, leaning his head on my shoulder. I wrapped my arm around him and pulled him closer. "How are you feeling?" I asked softly.

"Horrible," he mumbled. "I'm cold."

"Are you hungry?" I asked, taking the crackers out of the bag. He nibbled on a few as I stood and poured some medicine into a cup. He noticed and grimaced, shaking his head slightly. "I don't want it," he complained.

"You need to take it," I argued. "It'll help you feel better." He continued to refuse until I held the cup to his lip. He took the medicine and cringed, reaching for his glass of water on the side table. I kissed his cheek. "I knew you could do it." I said. "Now you need to lay down."

He grabbed my hand. "I'm cold," he whined. "Come lay with me."

I sighed and climbed in the other side of the bed. He shuffled as close as he could and laid his head on my chest, breathing deeply. He wrapped his arms around my torso and pulled me so there was no space between us. I kissed his forehead and felt a slight fever. His breath kept hitting my neck as he nuzzled into it further, like a puppy trying to get warm. I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his cheek. "Get some sleep," I whispered, running my fingers through his knotted black hair. He sighed and relaxed against me, his breath evening out soon enough.
