Chapter 9

                  Leon's POV

     We look at each other before she pulls out her knife. "I'll take left, you take right." Is all she says before running to the left.

     "But that way is blo-" I watch in awe as she gets up to the second floor, kicking two cultists when she flips up. "-cked..."

     She looks down at me and winks. "Get to work hot stuff!"

     I chuckle before running to the right. I take out a couple of cultist and get up to the switch. I hear rumbling and see part of the path rise back to place. "She works fast." I pull the lever before getting back to the first floor.

     I grab Alusia's hand and start running as the statue begins to walk after us. We dodge the pillars that begin to fall on us. I shoot the lock on the door right before we get there.

     Alusia throws an arm around my shoulders. Me thinking her leg is hurting her, I wrap an arm around her waist. She surprises me by drop kicking the door open as we get to it. We let go of each other only to grab each other's hand.

     We run through the door just seconds before the statue breaks through the wall. We continue to run from the statue, feeling the ground crumple under us. I pull Alusia forward right as we jump. She lands completely on the other side while I catch the edge.

     She grabs my arm, helping me get up on solid ground. I look to thank her only for her to yank me into a kiss. She pulls away before I can react. She pulls me to my feet before heading towards the doors of the tower. "Come on!"

     I chuckle slightly with a shake of the head before following. We walk through the doors to see Salazar with his remaining Verdugo bodyguard.

     Salazar claps. "So nice of you to join us, Mr. Scott Kennedy."

     "You again." I glare at Salazar.

     He seems to do a double take when Alusia moved to stand beside me. "Ah. I see you brought the mutt with you."

     'Mutt?' I glance at her to see her narrow her eyes at him but stay silent. I look back at Salazar when he begins to speak again.

     "The sacred rite that is about to begin at this tower will bestow the girl with magnificent power. She will join us, become one of us."

     "This is no ritual. This is terrorism."

     "Isn't that a popular word these days? Not to worry, we've prepared a special ritual just for you."

     I pull my knife out and toss it before he can trigger a trap. My knife hits him in the palm, sticking his hand to the wall. He looks at it with disbelief and whimpers in pain.

     I smirk. "Heh."

     The Verdugo yanks the knife out of Salazar's hand and tosses it back. I'm shoved out of the way. I stumble slightly and quickly look at Alusia, scared the knife got her. My eyes widen when I see she caught the knife by the blade, the tip just a hair away from her face.

     I quickly look when Salazar and his bodyguard get aboard the lift. I run towards the lift. "Stop!" I growl when they escape.

     Alusia flips the knife before handing it back to me. "We gotta take the stairs. Come on!" She runs towards the stairs. She throws a wink over her shoulder. "Cute growl by the way."

     I chuckle before running after her.

     We run into the main room where there is a giant plagas queen. Salazar is waiting for us on an alterlike platform along with his bodyguard.

     "Ah, you've just missed her. The ritual is over. She left with my men to an island."

     "What?" I look at him. 'Damn it!'

     "I think it's time I payed my due respects towards to your impressive and stubborn will. Mr. Kennedy.... Welcome!"

     We watch as tendrils and tentacles surround Salazar and his bodyguard, sucking them into the queen while Salazar laughs. They're merged into a new being, the alter gets destroyed and spikes prevent us from leaving.

     "Monsters. I guess after this there'll be one less to worry about.

     "Leon!" Alusia gets my attention.

     "Give me your rifle. You deal with the eye and I'll get Salazar when it's open."

     I nod, tossing her my rifle. We get to work quick. Dodging the tendrils when they swing our way, firing every chance we get. Alusia fires one more time, hitting him dead center of the head again. There's groaning as the monster finally dies. A door is revealed as everything begins to disintegrate.

     I pull Alusia into my arms, spinning her around a little. My heart skips, hearing her giggle in my ear. It almost makes me forget all that's around us. Almost.

     "Come on." I take her hand and lead us over to the edge. I jump down first and hold my arms out to catch her. She raises an eyebrow before jumping down... beside me. "I wanted you to jump into my arms."

     She pats my chest and winks. "Maybe later hot stuff." She runs to the other side.

     I shake my head and run after her. She climbs up first and I follow behind. I tilt my head when she raises an eyebrow at me. "What?"

     "My coat too long for you to get a good look at my ass?" She spins on her heel and walks through the doors.

     I shake my head with a chuckle before following. "Just a little bit."

     We get to a rope to get down. I go down first, glancing between Alusia and the ground. Once I'm down and wave for her to come down. I don't get much warning as she jumps... without the rope.

     I quickly catch her, nearly falling to the ground in the process. I look at her with wide eyes. "What the hell?!"

     She gives me an innocent look, though her eyes twinkle with mischief. "What? I thought you wanted me to jump into your arms."

     She giggles when I give her a deadpan look. She kisses my cheek before jumping out of my arms and heading towards the lift.

     I shake my head. "Women."

     I pull my gun out and keep Alusia behind me when I hear an engine. I see a speedboat waiting with Ada behind the wheel.

     She looks at me. "Need a ride, handsome?"

     I holster my gun, watching Ada. "Hmph. Okay." I walk over, turning around when I notice Alusia hasn't moved. I see her eyes are narrowed and trained on Ada. "Alusia?"

     She glances at me before slowly following. I get in the boat first so I can help her in. She brushes off my help and gets in by herself. She sits down in the back while I take the passenger's seat. Ada begins to drive the boat to the island.

     I look over my shoulder at Alusia, taking note of her closed off attitude. I keep my eyes on her, hoping for her eyes to meet mine. But they don't. Her golden orbs focused on the water.

     Not being able to stand her deafening silence, I ask her a question that's been in the back of my mind for a while. "Alusia. What was Luis's promise to you?"

     Her eyes flicker to me, before going back to the water. The sorrow in them stabs a knife into my heart. Her voice is soft and low, causing me to barely hear it. "To get me away from here. Get me back home to America."

     'He said he didn't need to be alive because he knew I would do it without asking.' I think to myself. 'I'll keep your promise, Luis. I'll get Alusia home.'
