Grace sat in the chair staring at Ethan as he sat at the edge of his desk. He was trying to get her to admit what she was afraid of, but was refusing to talk to him about it.
"What is it Grace? What on earth are you so afraid of? I'd really like to know, so I can understand you better... In my opinion, you deserve someone special in your life."
She felt anger building up inside her, she wasn't liking how he was talking to her, and gave him a dirty look "That's your opinion, I don't need you, and I don't need someone else in my life. I'm doing just fine on my own. Maybe it was a mistake for us? Maybe it wasn't, I don't know." she said, feeling confused.
"So, what you're saying is, you now regret it?"
She looked away from his stare, not wanting to look at him, unsure of how she felt. All she knew was, she enjoyed every minute with him. "No... I don't regret it." she said, quietly.
"What are you afraid of?" Ethan asked, while kneeling and grabbing a hold of her hands, trying to get her to look at him.
She looked at him, and felt her heart aching. In her heart she wanted him, but in her mind, she kept telling herself she couldn't have him "You deserve someone better than me. You're thirty-six, I'm fifty-five, I'm way too old for you."
"What the fuck does that have to do with the price of tea in China? Age is nothing but a fucking number, and I don't look at it that way. I could care less about that." Ethan felt hurt, and couldn't believe she brought up the age difference. He never looked at it that way, and wished she wouldn't either. He stood up, and walked towards the window. After talking with her, he wanted her now more than ever. "Maybe I'm what you need, can't you see that?"
"I have to go, I just wanted to tell you that." She stood up, and started walking towards the door. Ethan turned his head, saw her walking towards the door, and walked over to her, putting his hand on the door, not wanting her to leave. While holding the door, he used his other hand and caressed her cheek, while staring her in the eyes. "I don't believe anything you just said, but if you need to talk, you know where to find me."
"Please let me leave."
"Can I kiss you goodbye?" he asked, curling his finger under her chin, and tilting her head up.
When she didn't say anything, he leaned down, giving her a kiss. She pulled away, and turned her head "Please Ethan, let me go." she said, quietly.
He sighed, stepped away from the door, and watched her leave. At this point he didn't know what to do, or think. He sat back down at his desk, and continued finishing the work Antonio left him. He ended up staying until after ten at night, wanting to finish all the paperwork before he left.
On his way home, he decided he wanted to get drunk, and stopped at a bar. He looked around at all the girls inside, and not one of them interested him. He sat at the bar drinking shot, after shot, after shot, having no care in the world.
"Do you need us to call anyone?" The bartender asked, as Ethan leaned on the bar with a fist resting under his chin, and swirling the empty glass around, with only ice cubes inside, thinking about his situation.
He pulled his phone out of his pocket, and handed it to him "Call whoever, I don't care." The bartender looked at his phone, searched through his contacts, then looked under his ICE contacts, and noticed Antonio's name was listed as brother.
He called a couple times until Antonio answered, and explained to him what was going on. I'll be right there. Antonio said to him, before hanging up. The bartender handed Ethan's phone back, and gave him a glass of water. "Here drink this."
