Marigold Abbot was frustrated and upset with the scene in front of her. The redhead girl in front of her looked so sad and heartbroken after the news of the mistake.

"I simply don't understand," Marilla told her, "Were there no boys at the asylum?"

"There was an abundance of them," Anne replied, "But Mrs. Spencer said distinctly that you wanted a girl about my age, and the matron thought that I would do."

"This is what comes of sending word and not going ourselves. Follow me. Don't dally." Two children followed behind Marilla. "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there's nothing to be done. We want a boy to help Matthew with the farm work. A girl would be of no use to us. Do you understand?"

"I can't say that I do," Anne said. Mary's eyes widened.

"I beg your pardon?" Marilla exclaimed.

"I don't mean any disrespect, but couldn't I do the farm chores even though I'm a girl?"

"Come on, Marilla," Marigold jumped in. "I help Matthew all the time in the farm."

"That's not the way of things and you both know it," Marilla shot back.

"But couldn't I? I'm as strong as a boy, and I prefer to be outdoors instead of cooped up in a kitchen. I don't understand the conundrum," Anne pushed.

"Marilla, please. A girl can do anything outside of the stereotypes if she chooses to do so," Marigold said, trying to aid her new friend into staying.

"For example, what if, suddenly, there were no boys in the world, none at all...," Anne started only to be cut off by Marilla

"Fiddlesticks."

"It doesn't make sense that girls aren't allowed to do farm work when girls can do anything a boy can do and more! Do you consider yourself to be delicate and incapable? Because I certainly don't."

"I don't either," Mary agreed, getting a smile from her new friend.

"Anyway, since I'm here now, couldn't you consider it?"

"I could not," Marilla said, wiping the smile off both girls' faces. "And put those fool notions out of your head. I already get such foolishness from this one. Now come along. Let's get you both washed up for supper."
