Marigold Abbot was awakened by a bright light through her window and the stomping of feet outside her doors. Marilla burst into her room in a panic.

"There's a fire in town. Pull on your boots and hurry down," She told her. Mary threw back her blanket and quickly slipped on her shoes. She raced outside to meet Anne and Marilla at the barn preparing the horse. They made their way towards the fire just as many other members of the town did.

"This is the Gillis's house," Marilla told them.

"Oh, poor Ruby," Anne sighed.

"Anne! Marigold!" A voice called out to them. It belonged to Diana who quickly brought the girls into a hug.

"Oh, I've missed you so much!" Anne said before looking back at the fire to see Gilbert on a ladder pouring water into a window, "It's burning so fierce. Is everyone out of the house?"

"Yeah. That's the Gillis family over there. You see Ruby?" Diana pointed towards the family.

"Why are the doors and windows open?" Anne asked.

"What?" Marigold questioned. Anne quickly turned to her sister.

"Mary, have you ever read a fire manual?"

"Of course I have."

"Then what does fire need to keep it alive?" Mary looked at Anne with wide eyes.

"Oxygen." As soon as the word left her mouth, the sisters bolted towards the burning house.  soon as the words left her mouth, the two sister bolted to the burning building, despite the calls of protest from Diana. When they entered the house, the Cuthbert girls were immediately greeted with heat and smoke.

"I'll get upstairs, you get down," Mary coughed out. Anne nodded before hurrying off to the house as Marigold headed for the stairs. Her eyes burned as the smoke blinded her, but she pushed on and started to close the windows and doors. One door in particular was the room that Gilbert was throwing water into.

"Marigold?!" He shouted, shocked to find his best friend in the house he was trying to put out.

"Hey, Gilly," She greeted with a shy wave before she slammed the door on him. The blond finished closing all the doors and windows before she rushed down the stairs. However, due to the structure weakening from the fire, the steps she was running down where crumbling. Her foot fell through a broken step, causing her to fall and whimper at the pain. Anne saw this and ran to her sister's side and tried to help her, but to no avail.
