Chaos was the word to describe the commotion going around the school house as the spelling bee commesed. The groups were split between the boys and girls. Moody and Gilbert on one side as Tillie, Anne, and Marigold stood on the other.

"Spell Amorous," Mr. Phillips told Tillie.

"Amorous. A-M-O-R-U-"

"Ah wrong! Sit down. Spell Gorgeous."

"G-O-R-G-I-" Moody was interrupted.

"Argh! Sit down, you butcher of beauty. Ostracize?"

"O-S-T-R-A-C-I-Z-E," Gilbert spelled.

"That would seem to be correct," He turned towards Anne, "Haughty."

"H-A-U-G-H-T-Y."

"Acrimony."

"A-C-R-I-M-O-N-Y," Marigold spelled. That was the order. Gilbert, Anne, Marigold.

"Callous."

"C-A-L-L-O-U-S."

"Penitent."

"P-E-N-I-T-E-N-T."

"Fastidious."

"F-A-S-T-I-D-I-O-U-S."

"Intentions."

"I-N-T-E-N-T-I-O-N-S."

"Persevere."

"P-E-R-S-E-V-E-R-E."
"Insidious."

"I-N-S-I-D-I-O-U-S."

"Engagement."

"E-N-G-A-G-E-M-E-N-T."

"Ubiquitous."

"U-B-I-Q-U-...T?" Anne guessed.

"That is incorrect," Mr. Phillips told her, causing her to sit down as she held her stomach in pain. This left Marigold and Gilbert to battle it out.

"Quintessential."

"Q-U-I-N-T-E-S-S-E-N-T-I-A-L," Mary spelt without hesitation.

"Mercenary."

"M-E-R-C-E-N-A-R-Y."

"Idiosyncratic."
