narrative.
Alexis did not feel any better. She felt her world spinning, felt it disconnecting from her and spiraling out of her control. It was disconcerting, to say the least.
She twirled a pencil in a hand, barely paying attention to the teacher, who was walking around and preaching about genetics. Her eyes wandered around, and before long, they settled on her best friend’s twin, who was sitting diagonally across her.
“Psst. Hey.”
Alexis, having been caught off-guard, dropped her pencil and turned to her deskmate, Mary, whose raven hair was as unruly as ever, green eyes retaining their lively spark.
“What?” Alexis hissed out of the corners of her mouth, bending down to pick up her pencil.
“Caught you staring,” her deskmate smirked, forming a heart with her hands when Mr. Reed was not looking and placed it over her chest. “Lovesick?”
There was nothing Alexis wanted to do more than slap the life force out of one of her closest friends, but she held it in. So instead, she rolled her eyes and rested her chin in her hand.
“Come on, tell me.” Mary’s whisper did not catch Alexis by surprise — she was a tiny bit nosy when it came to her friends’ lovelifes. “Promise I won’t tell. Won’t judge, either.”
“Fine,” Alexis groaned, unwilling to put up with her consistent pestering. If she continued to refuse, she would experience the consequences later anyway and end up revealing her secret. Also, Mr. Reed was heading towards them now, and wanted to silence her talkative friend as quickly as possible, lest they get a detention.
And detention meant that there would be lesser time spent with Monroe.
“After recess.” Alexis whispered quickly. “And please comb your hair, for goodness sake.”

Mary took a sip from her Coke, eeriely silent. Alexis, who was sitting across her, stared her down intensely, hoping for a response, her hand in a fist across the table.
“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?” Her friend asked, tracing her tongue over her lips to rid any remainder of the carbonated drink. “I could have helped you.”
“It’s just–” Alexis looked away briefly, red colouring her pale cheeks. “–taboo, you know?”
Confusion made Mary raise a brow, her hand leaving her Coke can. “There’s nothing wrong in loving, Lex.”
“Maybe,” was all Alexis could say as her thoughts drifted away to the familiar image of her crush walking away, her head drooping in defeat. “Doubt my family would say the same thing.”
“What’re you girls talkin’ about?” Jerry’s low voice entered the conversation, and Alexis’ head snapped back up.
“Monroe!” She exclaimed, trying hard to pretend that they were not just talking about his twin. “Fancy seeing you here. I thought you’d skip today.”
Mary snorted into her can.
“Well,” his brown eyes met Alexis’ naturally, a habitual calm settled in them. “I was forced to come by a certain someone.”
He jerked his head to the left, hands in his pockets casually, where the person Alexis was waiting so eagerly for stood, eyes shielded by a hood.
Alexis found herself standing up abruptly and flying to her treasure, to the one person who made her feel better. To the one person who made her world slightly more eventful, slightly more meaningful–
