I took a deep breath and opened the door, walking in with my head down.
"Good evening Liv." My dad said with his usual serious tone. Mum has fixed up something special for dinner today and I didn't want to ruin it but I knew I would have to tell them someday.
We sat in silence, dad at the head of the table reading his book and me on the left side of him, browsing through my Instagram while mum was dishing up the delicious smelling food that I knew instantly was my favorite.I stared around the room and noticed a new picture was framed over the fireplace. It was a small photo but it was one of those things that held so much meaning and memories inside that it made me tear up at the sight of it.
"Are we ready for the main dish of the night?" Mum said, walking through the door from the kitchen like a waiter proudly presenting the chefs best creation.
"Yes please!" I say, grabbing my knives and fork after everyone was served.
We eat for a while in silence, me looking at the room around me to look for anything different. Mum hasn't seemed to notice the long scratch on the wallpaper which me and my girlfriend Cara accidentally did earlier this week. Phew. Dad is just sat there chewing lost in his own world far away from the planet earth and Mum was sat there watching us, trying to see if the both of us is ok. She thinks something is wrong, you can see it in the way her eyebrows scrunch up with worry. I do understand her concern, we aren't usually this quiet. I usually launch into a conversation seconds after everyone has sat down but today I am silent. She must be so confused.
I clear my throat. I know that my opportunity is now.
"Yes, love?" Mum answers, relieved to see he awkward silence finally be broken.
"I have something to tell you."
"Go on then, Sweetie, what's up?" My dad says, as if finally acknowledging that me and Mum are even here.
I decided to go straight to the point.
"Ummm. I'm a lesbian."
Dad chokes on his mouthful of food and tries to compose himself. I look over to my mum and see her face gradually flicker into a smile.
"Wait. Mum? Why are you smiling?" I ask, astonished with he outcome.
" well I've seen the way you look at that girl.... Clara, no, Cara! That's it! All me and your father want is for you to be happy right Dave?" Mum replies, glancing over at dad.
"Yes, honey, I think you should do what your heart tells you!" I can tell from the sparkle in his eye that he's not lying. This makes me so happy,
I was proved wrong. I thought that I would get called a freak and be rejected by my family but instead they embraced it as my parents and I love them for that!
For he rest of that night I smiled, thoughts running through my head like train tracks as me and my family curled up on the sofa watching family guy.
