Dismissed

They said that I couldn't make it.

They told me that my work wasn't good enough.

That everywhere I go, I would bring no good.

Well all you need to know is that they were wrong.

All they managed to do was make me stronger, even though it was obvious that it wasn't their initial intention.

It made me realise that I couldn't please everyone, that I couldn't be as perfect as I wished. But then again, no one is.

I walked towards the editing block and sighed, a few years ago I would never have imagined that I could ever be here. Lillian, my co-worker, stood next to the printer arguing with a familiar face while printing out her latest masterpieces.

Once reached the two women I noticed that everything had stopped. The printer had finished its job and the two photographers were glaring furiously at each other.

"Hey guys," I smiled, trying to ease the tension, I put a hand on Lils' shoulder and tried to figure out what was happening. "Is everything ok?"

At that moment Lillian shrugged off my hand and burst into tears, running down the corridor to her office and slamming the door behind her.

"I'm sorry you had to see that Maisie," My boss, Amelia stated, lightening her gaze. "Lillian has been dismissed and you have been promoted to Head Editorial Director in the Photography Section." She looked at the floor as if waiting for a shouting match or some kind of snarky or emotional comment. but when she received nothing she swiftly turned around and strutted back to the main office.

I got promoted? When did that happen?

That didn't explain why Lils has been fired though.

I walked back to my office and at down at the modern white desk my brother had bought me when he realised I had got the job.

I pulled out my phone from my charger and sighed, opening apple messages and typing.....

ME

Lils! What happened?

LILS

I got fired, what did you think happened?

ME

Ok miss sassy pants, Why were you fired?

LILS

They couldn't afford to keep me on, apparently I am expendable to the company.

ME

But you are such a great photographer, Lils, and you know it! I can't believe this has happened.

LILS

Thanks, I guess. Congratulations for your promotion by the way...

ME

Please don't be mad Lils, I really had no clue this was happening.

LILS 

I know Maiz, I'm not blaming you, you deserve that promotion! I'm just blowing off a bit of steamboat thats not fair on you.

ME

Its fine, are you free on Wednesday, we could get coffee and I could see you again, its not going to be the same without you.

LILS

Its ok. Yeah sure but I'm going home now, I'll text you later. Bye x

ME

I put my phone down to see a note...

My brother can be so sweet some times! Wait! Did everyone know about this except me?!

I look over to the photo on my desk of me and Charlie on the beach around a year ago in Brighton. He is smiling and his dusty brown hair is messed up from me dunking him in the sea. We're both covered in sand and we seem o happy to be there. He is great and I miss him so much.

He is a photographer to, he has so much talent, every piece of art I have seen him produce is beautiful in so many ways. The colour is always so gorgeously laid out, like he planned the Earth to look a certain way just so he could take one perfect picture.

I haven't seen him in so long, nearly a year!

Maybe if I saw him today wouldn't be such a mess.

Maybe he could be my brother today instead of the Charlie working halfway across the world.

And now I know what I need to do.
