The Moon Child

Chapter - 23

Po's P.oV:

" His breath was tickling the sensitive spot of my neck.... and I  loose myself in the the pure bliss I feel  as he runs his calloused hands along the side of my body. I try to touch his rock hard abs peaking through the half open shirt. He savours my touch and moans deeply as I trace my way down. And when I reach dangerously low, he  pushes me against the wall, trapping both my hands above my head and leans in, staring right into my eyes. His brown orbs filled with carnal desire.... leaning  in for a kiss....and then....... beeep beeeeeeeep beeeeee''

I wake up with a startle. Ten years.... It took me ten years to have a normal no nightmare dream and it had to be ruined by the stupid alarm. I turn off the alarm and try to get back to my dream. But unfortunately Kaiden of my dreams seems to have other places to be just like the real life one. I check the time and realise that I have plenty of time to hit the gym before going to school. I attend to my nature's call and then change into gym cloths. I jog down the hallway and out into the yard. As I jog past the small pond with the little fancy bridge, I see that strawberry blond head which I had been intending  to catch up with in a long time.

"Penny!" I call out to her. She gets startled a bit and trips. Just when she is about to fall into the water, I quickly grab hold of her and pull her towards me.
" That was close.", I tell her smiling sheepishly. She looks at me with bewilderment and then quickly moves away. She mumbles a thank you and begins walking away from me. She has been evasive of me for a little while and I intend to find out why.
"Penny wait. Please..." I call out while reaching out to grab her hand.
"Peter, let go. I need to go." she tells me while trying to free herself. I tighten my grip, not willing to back off.
"Penny. Listen I just want to talk. You were the first friend I made in this pack. But of late you have been avoiding me. Your boyfriend who had extended a hand of welcome when I got here, now treats me like his arch enemy. Have I done something wrong to disserve this? Have I hurt you in any way Penny? If so then I'm sorry. Please just tell me what went wrong and I will make up for it.", I plead to her and I see her eyes tearing up.
She suddenly hugs me and cries.

"Peter.. I..I'm so sorry. Its not your fault. It really isn't. But I cant tell you about it. Not here.", she tells me sobbing on to me. I comfort her and tell her its going to be fine. Guilt builds up in me for making her cry. This was not my intension.
"Its ok Penny. I don't need to know. I'm sorry. I wont bother you again." I tell her and when I'm about to leave, she tells me, " No Peter, you must know. Meet me at the library after class. And don't forget to pick your request for a tutor form from the front desk before coming."
I smile and we part agreeing to talk after school.

Feeling cheerful about things ending with a positive note, I decide to run a few laps before getting ready for school. I chose to run through the outer woods which form the periphery of the pack lands in the hope of seeing Kaiden and the enforcers who usually are on patrol duty there. I let Shiera fuse her energy with me, helping me run faster. And so, before long I reach the outer woods. These woods have always been a mystery to me. Somehow the trees appear darker and feels like they are more alive and active than usual. It's like they are sentries of some sorts laden with powerful magic. Then again, it could just be my imagination. I continue running along the periphery just outside the woods when I feel like someone or something is following me. Shiera heightens my senses and my vision improves ten folds. I stop running and cautiously walk towards the woods.
" You need to be careful. I sense something magical and not our kind. ", Shiera warns me. I break off a sturdy tree branch and hold it like a club. My makeshift weapon is crude, but it will have to do for now. I carefully walk deeper into the woods. My heartbeat is literally deafening me with it's crazy fast beating and my heightened hearing ability. I stop and take a deep breath to calm my nerves. Suddenly I hear a twig cracking behind me and almost instantaneously I spin around and bring down the tree branch on the opponent behind me. But I'm stopped mid attack and the branch pulled out of my hands.
" Duuude.... You could have cracked open my skull." Vince screams at me tossing away the branch he confiscated from me. I blink a few times before I realize that I'm surrounded by Kaiden and the guys. Shiera retreats back and I sheepishly grin back at them.
" Sorry guys I thought I saw some something. But I guess I was wrong." I tell them apologetically.
Kaiden walks past me shirtless and his copper tanned body glistening with sweat. He looks around and I notice his eyebrows scrunching up. He looks worried. Suddenly his eyes mist over and I notice the guys all becoming alert and scattering off in different directions. I'm sure he has mind linked some orders to them. But why all this secrecy?
" Kaiden..." I call out to him. His eyes revert back to normal and he smiles at me revealing his dimples.
" Don't worry... What ever you thought you saw was probably your mind playing tricks. The woods have that effect on people. Come on, it's getting late and I believe it's time for you the get to your classes. I will race you. The last one to get to the pack house will have to treat the other with burgers and fries", saying so he takes off.
" Hey !! Not fair ", I yell back and start running trying to catch up with him.

                                                                                                             **************

Mean while elsewhere.

" You are back so soon. Did everything go according to plan Victoria ?", Asks the head mage, Benitta.
" No, I'm afraid not Mamma B. I was almost discovered by the princess. It was as though she could see through my glamour spell. I thought I was almost done for. But thankfully the other wolves came by and distracted her." Victoria replies.
" I see. She grows stronger. Soon her powers will reach its full strength. Once that happens we won't be able to keep her hidden from Demitrius much longer.", Benitta responds worried. She walks over to the shelf and pulls out an old almanac. Flipping through its pages she asks," The charm... Does she still wear it ?"
" Yes. I noticed it around her neck. But the spell seems to be wearing off." Victoria says looking over to the older mage's shoulder into the almanac.
" I know. That is why I had sent you over to plant the moon-dust toadstools along the borders. Those mushrooms can cast a glamour spell powerful enough to hide the princess from the seekers the oracles are sending. With Matia taken out, the sisters powers have weakened. But it won't be for long. Mellontikos is still a formidable opponent and with Demitrius backing her, we should prepare for the worst. Under no circumstances should the princess be discovered before the blood moon. And if the almanac is right we might just have adequate time. Till then protecting the princess is our top priority." Benitta says closing the book and handing the mushroom spores to Victoria.
