Melissa POV
I only had a few images in my head of what happened after I hit the ground. I remembered the burning pain all over my body. I remembered the yelling. I remembered not being able to breathe, my lungs stinging with pain every time I took a breath. I remembered how I could feel every heartbeat in my head, the heat coursing through my brain, throbbing. The foggy feeling of laying on the concrete. I remembered Chris running toward me, crying. I remembered him saying "I love you."
I wanted so bad to just slip away into the peaceful, painless blackness, but his voice begging me to stay made me want to fight, to survive so I could tell him I loved him back.
I felt myself finally gain consciousness. There was someone tightly grabbing my hand, which made me feel a little bit more at ease. I slowly opened my eyes to find I was a hospital room. There was a constant, quiet beeping in the background, and I could see a nurse outside the room at her desk shuffling some papers. I moved my eyes, scanning the room. The news channel was playing on the TV. I saw the headline--
Freak Accident on the Set of CW's Supergirl leaves Actress Melissa Benoist in Critical Condition
I felt so groggy, my head was clouded. I turned my head to see who was holding my hand. It hurt just to move a few inches, so I groaned. I looked down to see Chris's head perk up at the sound I made. He had been sleeping at my side. "Melissa! You're awake" He smiled. He put his hand on my cheek. "Hi," he whispered.
"Hi, how long have I been out?" I whispered back weakly.
"A couple days. How do you feel?" He asked.
I chuckled, "Like I got attacked with wires before falling three stories to concrete. What happened exactly?
"Apparently the explosive was placed next to a gas line and that created a bigger explosion. The retractors on the contraption that put you in the air were damaged, so they couldn't get you down. The gas caused a huge fire, and because they kept pressing the button to get you down, there was so much tension built up in the wires that they snapped, and then--" Chris looked down and took his hand off my face. He started to tear up, 'Melissa, I love you so much. I just want you to know that. I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you. I love you."
"Hey--hey," I started. With all the strength I can muster I grabbed his hand and placed it back on my face. "This was no one's fault, okay? There was nothing you could have done. I love you, too--so much, and I will never blame you for this." He looked back up at me and gave me a weak smile. I stared into his eyes, they were so grey, full of sadness, but my chest was filled with joy. We loved each other. I never felt this much love in my life for another person, not even Blake when we first went out. Chris leaned in and gently pressed his lips to mine. I didn't bother leaning back in, I simply let him kiss me. Our lips parted and he tucked my hair behind my ear.
"Did you call my family?" I asked, remembering my parents and sisters.
"Yeah, all of the flights to Vancouver were full, but they booked one and should be here today. Chyler was here the day you were brought in, but she left a little while ago. She's been watching Drift and Farely." He replied sitting back down.
"You should go back home, get some real rest," I told him.
He shook his head, "No, no, I don't want to leave you, at least not until your family comes."
I nodded as much as I could with the whiplash I had. We just sat there together, hands interlocked. I felt safe with him, but soon I would know just how much fear was built up inside of me
