Chris's POV

Melissa had so much more fun on my bike than I had expected. I loved the feeling of her clinging onto my waist, I loved hearing her yelling out in excitement. Over the next few months, we would ride outside of the city every weekend. Something about the fresh air and being with Melissa was just perfect. We decided to drive down to Washington with the dogs and rent out a cabin. We even got a sidecar for my motorcycle for Farley and Drift to ride along in. The car zipped down a highway that was lined with evergreens and lakes freshly melted from the new spring warmth. My hand was interlocked with Mel's while my other hand was on the steering wheel. The two dogs slept in the back seat, and the radio played softly in the background. I looked over at Mel and saw she had a small smile on her face.

"What is it?" I asked

"What do you mean?" She replied tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

"You're smiling," I told her. I laughed because she didn't even notice.

"Oh," she chuckled. "I don't know, I just feel so happy."

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah. It's like that warm feeling in your chest kind of happy. No worries, no stress. Just being here with you and the dogs. Not a person around us. I feel like we are on another planet, a nice, peaceful planet where you and I are the only people that matter." She looked down at her lap and scratched her forehead. "I don't know, it's kind of stupid"

"No, it's not," I laughed still looking out at the road. "I'm happy, too" I look over at her for a split second trying to keep my eyes on the road. I brought her hand up to kiss it and she laughed, too. "Well if being out here makes you so happy we should do it more."

"That would be nice, but I don't think we'll be able to find a cabin to rent that often."

"Well, why don't we just buy one. Together." I proposed. I heard her inhale as if she were surprised.

"Buy one!? That's such a commitment!" She exclaimed.

"What do you mean?" I asked amused.

"Well for starters, we're only around Washington when we're filming in Vancouver. And secondly, I don't know if I want to buy a property with someone unless we're married." She answered. Suddenly an idea popped into my head. It seemed so impulsive, but it also felt so right at that moment, like something clicked together in my mind.

"Then marry me," I said.

Melissa's POV

The words that came out of his mouth rang in my ears as I turned toward him, wide-eyed. It echoed in my head as my heart started racing. "What?" I asked, stunned.

"Marry me." He said again, dead serious. "Obviously, it's not just to buy the cabin, but I love you more than anything and anyone in the world, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

A thousand thoughts ran through my mind as I said there with my mouth gaping open. Was this real? Was this a dream? Do I want to get married for the second time? But one thought trumped everything. A feeling that cloaked all of my indecisiveness and brought words to my mouth. It was love, and yes, I wanted to marry Chris.

He turned to me as I turned to him, his eyes locked on mine. Those blue and grey stormy eyes filled with love and happiness. His perfect face, his deep brown hair. Everything around him became blurry and he was the only thing I could focus on.

"Will you marry me?" He asked one last time.

I smiled so wide as the thick, warm feeling of love poured into my chest. I felt tears rising to my eyes. Just as I inhaled to answer I saw something in the corner of my eye and snapped back to reality. I realized Chris wasn't looking at the road and I turned forward. A dear scampered into the road about fifteen feet in front of the car.

"Chris!" I yelled out. He turned forward with panic and swerved the car to the side. The road was still wet from melting snow and we slid around the deer. But we weren't in control anymore. The car smashed into the guardrail and flipped. I saw the world turn upside down. I could see the deep green evergreens and the light blue sky switch places as we tumbled down the hill at the side of the highway. The sound of glass shattering filled the air. I felt a deep cut on my forehead, and the seatbelt almost piercing my waist. The car slid as it was still upside down and hit a tree, I could hear the sounds of birds flapping their wings as they flew from the tree we hit.

My head felt foggy and tight. I had to catch my breath before I could even assess the situation. I looked around. Blood was spattered on the remaining glass of the window shield, I didn't know who it belonged to. The radio still played softly in the background, some type of music from the '40s. Leaves were scattered on the ceiling of the car. The hair that hung down in view of my face was dyed red. I finally looked down at my hand, one of them still interlocked with Chris's, but something was different. His hand was limp, and blood was rolling down his forearm to the back of his hand. My eyes slowly made their way to look at Chris's face. I was terrified by what I might find. I looked at him. His eyes were closed and his neck was smeared with red. He was unconscious.
