Melissa's POV
It was hours before the police and ambulances showed up. I had sat there on the forest floor, dazed, with Chris in my lap and tears in my eyes. Thankfully, he never stopped breathing, but I had to replace the makeshift bandage I had put around his torso. He was losing blood. Every time I stroke his face he kept getting colder. I looked over Farley and Drift and they seemed to be fine. They kept me company as we waited. It was nearly dark once I saw the red and blue lights and heard the sirens. I remember crying of happiness as the rescuers made their way down the hill.
"Miss, What's your name? Are you okay? Are you hurt?" One of them said while two others started assessing Chris, who was still on my lap. Other rescuers and police started to look at the car wreck.
"My name is Melissa, his name is Chris. I'm fine just a small cut on my leg," I said trying to avoid talking about me, "How is he? Do you think he will make it?"
"Our job is to take care of him. Let me take a look at your cut." She said starting to pull me away from him
"No!" I yelled resisting her. "Go help him! I'll be fine"
"Miss, if I could just--" She started pulling me away again.
Tears started rolling down my face, "I am not leaving him! This is my fault, this is all my fault! I need to make sure he's okay, I can't leave him!" I was crying uncontrollably. If I hadn't been so happy he wouldn't have been so distracted. He would have never even been on this drive if it weren't for me, let alone proposing and looking away from the road. I stared at his body as they unwrapped the bandage and I just cried. I couldn't tear my eyes away.
The paramedic took me by my shoulders, "Melissa, look at me."
My eyes went from Chris's body to the paramedic, back and forth. I couldn't decide whether to listen to the paramedic or not. My eyes finally settled on the rescuer's calm face.
"My name is Sam," she said calmly. "this is Tom and Kate," Sam said pointing to the paramedics working on Chris, trying to make me more familiar with them. "I know you want to save him, you want to make sure he's okay, but the best way to be sure of that right now is to let us take him so we can treat his injuries. We will do everything in our power to help him, you just have to let go, okay?"
I took a few deep breaths and nodded. I finally let them pull Chris off my lap and onto a stretcher. Sam started unwrapping the bandage on my thigh and cleaning out the cut. Another paramedic came over with a blanket and started treating the cuts on my forehead. Sam helped me get up the hill while the other rescuer brought the dogs up. I got into the ambulance with Chris and we took off. As I sat there staring at Chris's body, I started to feel light-headed. I felt a sharp pain in my leg as I started to pass out. I watched the paramedics charge paddles as I started to fall onto my side, and as I started to fade away, only one thought was rushing through my head. What had I done?
Later
My eyes fluttered open to the sight of Chyler reading a magazine in a chair at the foot of my hospital bed. Why a hospital bed? I thought to myself. Then I remembered. The small brown deer in the middle of the road, glass shattering, Chris's still body. Chris. I sat up in my bed as quick as I could and tried to pull out my IV. Chyler stood right up and ran over to me.
"Melissa! Stop! You need to rest!" She said eagerly.
"No! Where's Chris? I need to make sure he's okay! I need to see him. Where is he?!" I said frantically, now trying to rip off the monitoring patches on my chest. I was nearly panicking, I needed to see him, to tell him that I would marry him, to tell him I love him. Chyler grabbed my wrists but I resisted. I tried to escape her grasp, but I was weak. Tears started to well in my eyes.
"Melissa!" She still tried to restrain me. Nurses ran in but she gave them a look, signaling them to stand back. "Melissa, you need to calm down and rest. You lost a lot of blood and your wounds haven't healed fully. You can bleed out if you stand up. You can see Chris later, okay?"
"No no no, Chyler you don't understand! I did this to him, it was me! I need to see him. I need to go to him." I cried. I used all of my strength to try and break free, but I felt trapped.
"Melissa! You need to listen to me! You won't get to see him at all if you bleed out on your way to the recovery center. The best thing you can do right now, for you and Chris, is to rest." She looked at me with worry in her eyes and slowly loosened her grip on my wrists. I started to take deeps breaths, and the nurses started to exit the room. I started to lay back down slowly, cheeks still wet with tears, as Chyler started speaking again.
"Mel, what did you mean when you said that you did this to him?" She asked.
"When he looked away from the road he was proposing to me. I should have realized he wasn't looking at the road. I should have been able to warn him! But I was all caught up in my happiness. It's like every time I get happy, something goes terribly wrong."
"How so?" Chyler asks.
"Well, take the first time I realized I loved Chris. I fell 3 stories to concrete. Then, right after I get better, I get pregnant but guess what, I lose that, too. And then Chris proposes and we end up in a ditch at the side of the road. I feel like the universe just doesn't want me to have a happy ending."
Chyler took my hand and wiped a tear of mine away. "I have watched your relationship grow, and Mel, I have never seen you happier. And I know bad things keep happening, but I don't care what the universe says, your love with Chris is too great to throw away." She gave me a weak smile and I squeezed her hand. Suddenly we heard a knock. I looked up to see a nurse wheeling in an empty wheelchair.
"I don't mean to eavesdrop, hun, but she's right." The nurse said. Chyler and I giggled. "Anyway, I can take you if you like, to see him. I'll be watchful, and make sure you don't bleed out."
I looked from the nurse to Chyler, and she nodded giving me permission. I turned back to the nurse. "Yes, please. I would like that very much."
