Jenna led them upstairs into the familiar areas of the institute. Charlie didn't like the emptiness that now echoed around him. he wished that Mr. Ravenwell would walk in, laughing at one of his old jokes. or Mrs. Ravenwell fussing over how dirty the institute was. now it just seemed dark, and as if all the light had been sucked out.
there was a loud noise and the three shadowhunters spun around to face Max.
"sorry, I didn't think that would make so much noise," he said setting down a broken light.
"Don't touch anything." Jenna hissed in annoyance.
"so what is it we are exactly looking for?" Max added whipping his hand over his red button down.
"something that the Clave might have missed," Charlie responded.
"I thought the Clave looked through everything, even one's underwear drawers." Max mused.
"Maybe, but we know our parents, the Clave doesn't. they might have left a clue for us or something." Cole said, sending Charlie and annoyed look.
Charlie nodded and motioned for him to follow into the Ravenwell's office. Jenna walked past them towards the library, Max chattering behind her.
"Why is he even here?" Cole hissed in annoyance.
"He's supposed to be looking after us, He's right on one thing though, the Clave have cleaned this place up. not even the blood is still here. I say we set him up doing something 'important' and book it." Charlie whispered.
"Where would we go? this was our home!" Cole asked sadly.
"We are not leaving Georgia till we find answers, that's for sure," Charlie replied.
"What about your Dad's?" Cole asked.
Charlie smiled, following Cole's train of thought. he nodded and they both walked out to meet Jenna and Max in the main lobby looking under chairs.
"Anything?" Jenna asked hopefully.
"Not in their office, no," Cole said with a sigh.
Jenna huffed and angrily sat down, crossing her arms.
"There are too many rooms in here, we'll never get done in time." Jenna groaned.
"How about we go back to my house then, there you can all rest and ready yourselves for the trip to New York." Max offered with a smile.
Jenna, Cole, and Charlie all sent him a glare, which he just shrugged off.
"what if we split up? Max you take the top floor, Jenna the third floor, Cole the second and I'll take this floor again. that way we can check everything." Charlie suggested.
Jenna sat up happily, Cole nodded already sensing their plan unfolding. Max frowned and shook his head.
"Why!" Jenna snapped at him
"You three are under my protection, I can't have you three running off on me," Max answered, there was a slight tinge of fear in his voice, he was possibly thinking about what the Clave would do to him.
"Fine then I'll take the top floor and you can take this floor, that way you can guard the front entrance so none of us get out. besides with your magic, you could try to find something, maybe footsteps?" Charlie offered.
Max looked a lot more comfortable with this plan and nodded. he turned around, searching the room to see where to start while the three shadowhunters walked to the stairs. they went up siltently to the second floor where charlie led them into an empty room.
"Why did you have to put him at the entrence?" Cole hissed at him.
"What?" Jenna asked,
"look, we'll take the top window. the good thing about being in Atlanta is that the buildings are close together." Charlie whispered.
"What's going on?" Jenna whispered back to them.
"We're getting out of here. we aren't going to find anything here, the Clave took care of that. " Charlie answered quietly.
"And if we stay with Max, he'll turn us into the Clave and we'll be forced to leave. none of us are 18 yet, and he's rightly scared of the Clave." Cole finished.
Charlie nodded, Jenna looked between the too and shook her head.
"I hate when you come up with plans without me, and when you talk like that," she said.
Charlie smirked at her.
"so what's the plan?" she asked.
"The plan was to use the front door but now Max is blocking the exit," Cole said defeatedly.
"We just take the window!" Charlie resaid.
"The buildings might be close but we can't jump that far!" Cole snapped.
"Cole, darling, we're shadowhunters," Jenna said with a smile.
Charlie nodded and led them to the roof of the church. thankfully it was a more block-like structure and they could see around them. as they stood on the edge Charlie began to see that Cole had a point. the buildings were close but not near the church.
"you still want to jump?" Cole stated proving his point.
Jenna whipped out her stele and began to draw a rune on her arm. red surrounded the new mark as she took a couple steps back. she moved her hand axes up her waist and repositioned the giant axe on her back.
"Jenna, don't you even think about it," Cole ordered.
"Cole, dearest, if you don't try you'll never know if you can make it," she replied with a smile, finishing the second rune up her arm.
"And who said that?" he snapped.
"Me," she answered matter-of faculty before jumping into a full sprint.
she raced past both of them before either boy could stop her. her foot barely touched the edge of the building before she sent herself flying through the air. Charlie and Cole rushed to the edge.
"I can't watch," Cole said spinning around and sitting down on the stone.
Charlie could see Jenna's smile even from here as she soared through the air. she pulled out her hand axes and landed into the side of the building next to the church. she used both of them to throw herself onto the roof.
she landed on the edge of the cafe and turned to them, a proud smile on her lips.
"Is she dead? I'm going to kill her!" Cole snapped.
"No, she actually made it. and left us stepping stones." Charlie said with a tiny laugh.
Cole sat up and looked to his sister who waved at them and gave a sigh of relief. Charlie helped Cole up and they runed each other. Charlie followed after Cole who used Jenna's axes in the same way she had. Charlie pulled them out of the side of the building as he landed next to them.
"Thank you," she said with a smile, taking them back and putting them in their holders.
"If you ever do that again-" Cole started.
"Then I will found another way to save your life and our mission. now let's go, who knows how long Max will think we're looking for clues." Jenna replied.
"she's going to kill herself one of these days," Charlie said with a laugh following after her.
"I'm going to kill her myself one of these days," Cole muttered.
