Adaline sat quiet at the table. Hanna and Spencer were talking back and forth to each other; Emily was talking to Aria although they both seemed distant. Adaline looked down at her lunch bag with disgust. She had packed herself a small salad with vegetables and grilled chicken, applesauce and crackers, and a small green apple.
She got through half the salad and a bite of the apple before she felt sick.
"Are you good?" Spencer asked.
"Hmm? Oh, yeah. I'm just feeling a bit sick," sighed Adaline. "My doctor said I'd feel like this every so often."
The girls weren't buying the bullshit Adaline was selling, but after everything that happened, they did not want to pry into her.
Adaline excused herself from the table to go to the restroom. She politely passed through the crowd and out into the hallways and pushed open the bathroom door and locked herself into one of the stalls.
She rested her back against the stall door. Breathing heavily, she barely heard the chime of her phone. Fearful of who it was, she slowly took her phone out of her pocket.
Her eyes will find you.
-AAdaline furrowed her eyebrows. 'Her eyes will find you'? What did that mean? She heard the restroom door open, followed by a slight tapping. Her eyes widened. She peaked through the crack of the stall and made out a blurry figure washing their hands. From that blurry figure Adaline spotted a key detail: large sunglasses.
Adaline sucked in her breath and stumbled back, dropping her phone into the toilet. "Shit!"
———
Adaline spent the complete last period of the school day on her laptop, trying to contact her dad through Facebook. The attempts were all failures. Eventually, her dad was to check the website, but until then, she stayed at the school. More specifically, the courtyard.
She had already finished her homework for all of her classes and was simply browsing the internet now. Her laptop was soon to die and since it was the only chance she had to contact her dad, she got off from it. She turned the notification noise up and closed it. She put it off to the side and pulled out a book from her bag.
"Leroux? I didn't know people still read him?"
Adaline brought her gaze from the book to where the voice came from — Mr. Fitz.
"No one does — besides me —I guess," Adaline dog-eared the page despite her who body telling her that was an ugly move to do. "But I really enjoyed the musical when I went to New York, so I thought it'd be nice to read the source material."
