Adaline arrived late to school the next day. Since she had left her phone at home, she wasn't aware of the time, and she had completely missed her makeup quiz for Fitz.
Regretfully, she made her way to Fitz's class about 20 minutes after it began. Her eyes glanced in the door window as she knocked. Even from outside, she could cut the tension with a knife.
Mr. Fitz answered the door and accepted her tardy pass. Without attracting too much attention, she walked passed most of the class to get her seat behind Aria, who fumed at the ears.
Fitz then droned on with his lesson. Adaline - who has yet to catch up on her reading - tried to absorb as much she could. Regardless of her attempts, her eyes drooped and her breaths softened.
Not even the bell woke her.
As the students left the room, Mr. Fitz erased the markings of chalk on the board. He turned back to his desk and slightly glanced up.
"Adaline!" his voice shook her awake. "You are aware this is a classroom, not a bedroom."
Adaline rubbed her eyes with her hands and continued with the rest of her face.
"I'm sorry," she apologized, although it was muffled by her hands.
"Where were you this morning? I thought you were making up the quiz," he questioned, taking a couple steps towards her.
"Uh, I was at a bus stop," she admitted. "It was the only place I could sleep. Even then, it was shitty sleep."
Fitz sat in the seat right infront of hers — Aria's. "Why did you sleep at a bus stop?"
"I got into an argument with my dad, and I needed to get out my house," she sighed, tears brimming in her eyes. "If I went to any of my friends' houses, their parents would have called my dad."
Not long before — Fitz had anger coursing through his veins — now pity took over. He felt terrible for this vulnerable girl in front of him.
"If you don't mind me asking - why did you and your dad get into a fight?"
Adaline hesitated before reaching into her back pocket and retrieving the photos, letter, and flash drive. She first showed him the letter, then the photos before admitting she had no clue what was on the flash drive.
He respected her privacy enough that he didn't look at all the photos, for they were extremely racy. He suggested that if she wanted to know what the flash drive held, she could use his laptop. She agreeed.
"Are you fucking kidding me, Alison?" seethed Adaline. "Are you really gonna pull that bullshit now?"
"Yes, I am, Addy," Alison retorted. "Don't you think it's time you get knocked off that high pedestal?"
Adaline crossed her arms over her chest. "Like hell, Ali. If anyone needs to get knocked on their asses, it's you."
Alison rolled her eyes and stomped off. Adaline stayed for a second before calling out, "You better be careful, Alison. If you keep acting like that, someone may just kill you!"
