Adaline hung her head in despair, trying to pinpoint where everything had gone wrong. People passed by her, dressed in police uniforms, ignoring her questions. From the corner of her eye, she spotted a familiar face. She perked up, which caught his attention.

"What's going on?" she asked quietly, trying to not get either one of them in trouble.

He stood adjacent from the desk she was at, pretending to search through a file. "They're going through your things now."

"My bag or my house?" said Adaline intensely. She didn't have enough time to go home and hid everything before she was arrested.

"Your bag now," he said. "They're still getting a search warrant for your house, but it won't be much longer."

Adaline dropped her head into her hands. "If they get my laptop, it's all downhill from there."

BEFORE

"There you are," said Mona, walking towards Adaline through the crowded hallway. "This is for you."

Adaline furrowed her eyebrows, glancing down at the invitation in Mona's hand. She took it haphazardly. "What is this?"

"An invitation, silly," said Mona with a broad smile. "My birthday is this weekend, and we're going glamping!"

"Glamping?" asked Adaline, laughing slightly. "What is that exactly?"

"It's like camping, but there will be massages and makeovers," said Mona. She quickly stopped Naomi - who was walking by - and gave her an invitation too. The girl smiled and went on her way, but Mona turned back around with disgust on her face. "I hate that girl so much."

Adaline chuckled nervously. Mona had just acted like Alison. "Why the invite?"

"She's rich and give great gifts-"

"No, Mona. My invite? I didn't think we were friends?"

Mona sighed softly with a genuine smile on her face. "I gave the others invites because they're Hanna's friends, and I'm making nice, but I gave you one because I think you're great."

"Great?" asked Adaline. She put the invitation in her AP World History book as a bookmark and stuck it back in her locker.

"You apologized," she admitted quietly. "It's more than I've gotten from anyone else. Hanna is great for fashion and stealing, but I can feel her pulling away, and it's not like I can actually expect the others to come. "

"We've just been going through things with Alison," said Adaline, slightly lying. "I can't account for the other girls, but I promise I'll be there."

Mona grinned widely and offered her arm which Adaline took. The two walked to the courtyard together for their free period with their elbows hooked together. Though they were meant to spend free periods during homework and such, Mona and Adaline were on their laptops.
