Chapter Ten- Our Song
“Dakota?” I lifted my head from my hands as I heard Luke’s voice call my name.
I took in a deep breath, still trying to calm myself down, and left the bathroom. I walked past Luke and Jai’s room where Jai was still in there- he was lying down on his bed, facing the wall. As I walked past the door the still fresh memory of the kiss played over and over in my head. I tried desperately to shake the thought off my mind and to not make it so obvious that something was up when I ran into Luke as he was coming out of the kitchen.
“You ready to go?” Luke smiled at me, a cute little picnic basket in his hands.
“Yeah” I smiled back at him.
Luke drove us to this amazing park which was right next to a small lake. There were children playing at the playground near-by and there were multiple couples just walking around very much in-love. We both decided to set up our picnic in a more secluded area near the lake, next to a bunch off flower bearing trees.
I laid the red plaid blanket on the grass and sat down on it as Luke began to empty the contents of the picnic basket onto plates. My mouth started watering as he brought out cupcakes, strawberries and blueberries, chocolate and biscuits.
“You really didn’t have to do all of this for me.” I said, genuinely thankful for all the effort that he put into this day.
“But I wanted to” Luke smiled at me again and sat down on the mat next to me, his arm eventually making its way around my waist. I laid my head on his shoulder and we stayed like that for about ten minutes just watching the views around us before we started eating.
The rest of the time was spent with Luke and I bantering back and forth, always laughing. But the entire time I couldn’t help but be eaten alive by the guilt that overshadowed my thoughts. I didn’t talk to Jai after the kiss, so I was still confused as to what even happened or what was going through his head. One part of me wanted to tell Luke what happened as soon as the picnic was over…but I didn’t want to ruin the wonderful day he set up for us. On the other hand, I thought that I should wait until I talked to Jai and got his side of the story before I go and break the news to Luke.
“It’s getting dark- we should go; I don’t want you getting a cold!” I laughed at Luke’s concern for me, and got up- walking to the car with his arm loosely slung around my shoulders.
The drive back to Luke’s house was mostly in a comfortable silence until he turned on the radio.
“OH TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY WANT” Luke sang horribly to the Spice Girls while looking at me with high eyebrows.
“SO TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY WANT” I sang back to him, just as horribly, while both of us laughed at how easily we were entertained. I changed the radio station to find better songs to sing along to, once that one was finished.
There was nothing good on the radio, so I just decided to turn it off- creating a silence within the car. A few moments later, Luke started humming a song that sounded familiar, but I couldn’t exactly pin point what the song was.
“When you look me in the eyes, and tell me that you love me, everything’s alright, when you’re right here by my side.” He sang aimlessly while taking one of his hands off the steering wheel and interlocking it with one of mine. I smiled at him and mouthed ‘aww’ as he smiled to himself- still concentrating on driving.
For the rest of the drive, we both sang the lyrics to ‘When you look me in the eyes’ to each other. And everything was going perfectly until I realised that sooner or later I had to tell Luke about mine and Jai’s little ‘secret’. I didn’t know when I was going to tell him though. But one thing I did know is that Jai and I were going to have a little talk when I get back to his house…I was just scared about how everyone would react. What happens if Luke and Jai get into a fight? Because at the end of the day- I would be my fault.
“I was riding shot gun with my hair undone, in the front seat of his car. I grabbed a pen and an old napkin and I, wrote down our song.”
