Chapter Four- Today was a Fairytale
“Kids- dinner’s ready!” I heard Gina yell from the dining room.
Luke and I stopped taking random photos and went into the dining room to see everyone already sitting around the table. Gina was at the head of the table, my mum was to her right, and Beau was to her left. I sat across from Luke, and next to Jai.
The food was still really hot, as you could see the steam radiating off it. Gina made lasagne with a side of ceasar salad and toasted bread. As we were eating, everyone was catching up and telling stories of their lives that each other missed. Friendly laughter and joyous giggles were contagious; everyone was just enjoying each other’s company and acting like my family never moved away for nearly a decade.
Fifteen minutes later, i had finished my meal and so had Luke- but we were still sitting at the table just looking at each other. I could tell Luke was getting pretty bored because I saw him smirk at me then I felt him kick me slightly under the table. Well I guess two can play at that game. He must have forgotten that I was wearing heels…I kicked him back, making sure the heel of my shoe made contact with him.
“Ouch!” I started laughing as Luke lifted himself off his chair for a second after I kicked him.
Everyone looked our way and I sat there looking as innocent as a baby rabbit. Mimicking him, I smirked at Luke who was now rubbing the sore spot on his leg that I kicked. Jai looked towards me and extended his hand- signalling for a high five. I slapped his hand and laughed again.
“So Dakota- I heard that you had a football playing boyfriend while you were in New York!” Gina winked at me as I blushed and looked down.
“Mum why were you telling everyone about my love life?!” I looked at my mum with wide eyes and she and Gina just laughed.
“Because I’m your mother- I’m supposed to embarrass you, that’s my job!”
“How long were you together for?” Gina asked me
“Almost two years” I smiled remembering the guy I once loved. We were together for so long- it was my first long term relationship. I really did love him- he was so good to me. The only reason we broke up was because I found out I’d be moving back to Australia.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Luke tense and frown at his plate, not making eye contact with me or anyone in the room. Was he jealous? Nah, he can’t be- what does he have to be jealous for? He doesn’t even like me like that.
“Oooo what was his name?” Beau leaned forward and raised his eyebrows, as if he was a young gossiping girl.
“His name was Jesse”
“McCartney?!” Jai screamed suddenly- making everyone burst out in fits of laughter.
We had dropped the subject of my relationships, and it was now time for my family to leave. I didn’t want to go- but I was getting tired and I’m pretty sure everyone else was too- considering it was nearly 11pm.
I went and hugged Gina and all of the boys. When I hugged Luke, he held me in his arms for a while until he said;
“Want to do something tomorrow?”
“Sure, I’d love to”
“I’ll pick you up at six tomorrow night. We’ll do something special- just me and you.”
Luke pulled away from the hug and smiled at me, his eyes sparkling slightly.
“I’ll see you then, bye Luke!” I said as I was literally dragged out of the house by Matt for taking so long
“Bye Kota!” Luke said- using my old nickname.
As I laid down in bed that night, Luke’s words kept floating around in my head. ‘We’ll do something special- just me and you.” It was almost like my heard skipped a beat whenever I thought about it. What did he mean by something special? Like was it a date, or were we just going out as friends like we did before? But whatever it was, I was happy just to be with him.
“Today was a Fairytale, you were the prince, I used to be a damsel in distress. You took me by the hand and you picked me up at six; today was a Fairytale.”
