Chapter Fourteen- You’re not sorry
I woke up the following morning with red, puffy eyes from crying so much. I checked my phone again that was sitting on my bedside table and saw that I had 24 new text messages and 18 missed calls. More than half of those belonged to Luke, the others were from either Jai, Beau, Skip and James.
I turned off my phone as I received another text and threw it on the ground- not wanting to talk to anyone. For over an hour I sat in bed, reading magazines when I heard a knock at my bedroom door. Matt poked his head in to make sure that I was awake, then fully came in with a cup of hot tea in his hand.
“Hey sis, I heard about what happened.” He came in and placed the cup of tea down on the bedside table and sat on my bed.
“Who told you?” My voice was barely audible as it was croaky and harsh
“Jai called me to check up on you. They’re all worried about you- you won’t return any of their calls.” His kindness right now baffled me; usually when I’m going through something like this, he tells me to dump the guy and get over it.
“Everyone except Luke.” I teared up saying Luke’s name as well as getting immensely angry at the same time.
Matt sighed and looked like he was struggling to find the right words to say.
“Look, he does care about you- even if he didn’t show it yesterday. He made a stupid decision…you have every right to be mad- but at some point you’re going to have to talk to him.” I looked down, not wanting to make eye contact because I knew that he was right.
“I don’t have to talk to him. I don’t want to talk to him either. I want nothing to do with him.” I took a sip of the extremely hot tea, then put it back down waiting for it to cool some more.
“That’s going to be kind of hard considering that your best friends are his best friends and brothers.” I rolled my eyes, not wanting to continue with the conversation anymore.
“Can you please go now? I appreciate the advice and the tea, but I kind of just want to be alone right now.” I looked at Matt directly for the first time in the conversation, my eyes pleading with him.
“Sure. Mum and Dad have gone away on business, but they left you a note.” Matt handed me an envelope with ‘Dakota’ written on it and walked out of the room, not saying anything else.
I opened up the letter and begun to read it;
"To our darling Dakota,
Matt told us what happened with Luke and yourself and we’re so sorry that we can’t be there with you throughout the drama. We just want to let you know that we both love you very much and to do whatever your heart tells you to- don’t worry about anyone else, just do what you think is right for yourself. And remember; everything will be okay in the end, and if it’s not okay…then it’s not end.
Love Mum and Dad xx"
I smiled slightly and put the letter down. I grabbed a hair tie off of my bedside table and tied my hair up in a messy bun while putting lip balm on to smooth out my chapped lips. I heard another knock at the door.
“Matt, I said I didn’t want to talk right now.” I said Matt hoping that it was him. I didn’t want it to be Luke because I didn’t want to hear his sorry excuses.
Instead, Beau, Jai, James and Skip walked into my room and stood facing me in my bed. They all looked really tense.
“Are you okay?” Beau was the first to speak
