The overhead light in the hospital room was suddenly overbearingly bright. Kary stared at her shoes and looked paler than usual. I got out my phone and it read 7:34 PM. Kary and I had been at the hospital for over two hours. Uncle Tom and Aunt Jade didn't get off until 8:00 PM. I flipped through a pamphlet about STD's and nervously shook my foot. The doctor hadn't been back for over thirty minutes. Kary kept looking at her phone every passing minute. We hadn't eaten anything and hadn't really said a word to each other since the doctor said I was really sick.
Then, the metal door handle twisted and a scrawny blonde nurse walked in.
"Hi. Marley Simon?" She grabbed a clipboard out of her pocket.
"Yes." I cleared my throat and tucked my hair behind my ears.
"Great. So, how long have you both been here?" She asked looking at Kary too.
Kary looked at me and at the floor. "We've been here for over two hours."
She talked about how it could just be a bad virus that would most likely go away. She also that they were running tests on my samples, but wouldn't have results for a few days. We drove home and I tried my best to not get sick. What the hell was going on with me? I never get sick. Even as a little kid I never missed a day of school.
I ran upstairs to the bathroom and leaned over the toilet squeezing my eyes shut as my guts spilled out of me. I sat by the toilet until I heard a little knock at the bathroom door. I had been in the bathroom for over an hour.
"Hey sweet pea." Aunt Jade was carrying her purse and trying to act as if I was okay. I wasn't.
"Hey." My voice cracked and I almost gagged at the taste in my mouth. She told me that I was going to feel a lot better soon and that this was probably nothing. I knew better than her though. This wasn't just nothing. This was definitely something. She talked to me about other things, but I had zoned out and I think she knew that I had, but carried on anyway.
"Okay, well. I'm going to bed. I had a long day." I told her goodnight and she silently shut the door to leave me. I sat on the orange rug and stared at the paint job on the wall. Time passed and passed. After a while, I glanced at the clock and it was after 11:00. I stood up and felt as if my soul had left my body and that I was a dead being. The hall was completely dark. Kary's door was open and her room was dark. Stephen's room was the same way. I sauntered to my room and saw a note taped to my door.
Marley,
I went out to a small get together. Oh, who am I kidding?? I went to a party. Haha. I didn't want to bug you in the bathroom to say goodbye. I made you a small bowl of soup. It's in the fridge.
Sleep well,
Kary P.S don't have too much fun without me ;)
I smiled to myself and sat the note on my bed. The moon was shining brightly into my room lighting my room up a little. I shut the door and turned my lamp on. I had set the book, Twilight, on my night stand from the library. I had always wanted to read it. I sat on my bed filling myself with wild details about the scandalous relationship between Edward and Bella. I soaked up all of the mushy details like a sponge. I read for hours and hours occasionally picking up the bucket to empty myself.
Life inside a book was so much better than actual life. I imagined myself as an outside character seeing everything that happened in the book inside my thoughts. I fell asleep around three in the morning and dreamed of a sexy dark haired vampire. Okay, okay, dreams are better too.
