Varian's POV
"Are you alright?" Whispered Hypatia. Even though she was only a few paces a head of me, she was nearly lost in the white landscape. Terrin too for that matter. Both people almost blended in seamlessly to the landscape. We had been walking for three days through these mountains and we had only two more to go if Hypatia's map was right. I shivered," Yeah, I'm fine."
Terrin sighed and held up his lantern a little bit higher, the flickering flame hardly making a difference. We were carrying some amount of our supplies, the weight of which laid heavy on my back. Hypatia held onto a map and pointed to a path entirely undiscernable to anyone but her. Terrin and I followed Hypatia and eventually we arrived at  a narrow ledge. We would have to cross it, but my mind spun at the sight of the long drop down.
"Ready?" Hypatia asked me. I gave her a reassuring smile and stepped on to the path.
We edged our way on to the slim ledge, trying not to notice the little pebbles that fell beneath us, only to be swallowed up by the darkness below. We shuffled along at a snail's pace, bracing ourselves against the vertical cliff side.
Hypatia's face was twisted in concentration, her eyes firmly locked ahead of her. It happened in a flash. A faint scream nearly swallowed up by the raging winds. One moment she was there, the next she wasn't. I flung out my hand and by what felt like pure luck, touched skin. I was nearly pulled from the ledge by her weight.
"Varian!" Hypatia screamed. She was hanging by a single finger. I reached down farther, desperately trying to hold onto her. I reached down an grasped the hand that was clinging to me just as hard as I was clinging to her. She now wrapped both hands around mine," Oh god....
I glanced down and gulped. I grit my teeth and pulled," I've got you. Don't worry, I've got you."
Terrin helped me haul Hypatia up and back onto the ledge. She was shaking and I heard the waver in her voice when she spoke.
     "Thank you."
We continued walking until Terrin found a cave. We eagerly ducked inside and I pulled out my material for a fire. Hypatia was quiet and I kept glancing at her. Her arms were wrapped tightly around her, as if she needed to remind herself that she was still there, that she was still alive. Once I got the fire going, she crawled over to it, slowly warming her hands. I sat next to her, watching the light flicker over the ridges and valleys of her face. Terrin was pulling out food and handed us sandwiches.
"Well, that's the last of the ham sandwiches," he announced. I chewed mine, letting my mind skim over the day's events. We would be out of these mountains in two days and I could not wait to see the end of this vast whiteness.
