Tobias drove a dark car, and as we navigated our way through the dirty streets, Uriah snoozed peacefully in the back. I glance out the window, watching the white flurries hit the ground in soft piles. I turn back, facing Tobias.
"So, Uriah told me he was a bounty hunter. I'm assuming you're in a similar line of work." He shoots me a wry smile, never taking his eyes off the road.
"Something like that. While Uriah works on smaller cases, I'm more of a stakeout guy. I do private investigations for the PD department, and basicslly just a shit ton of sitting in cars and watching the same place for an entire week." I laugh, and he smiles softly.
"Sounds incredibly boring. Probably still better than cleaning up vomit off the bars." He wrinkles his nose and shakes his head
"Can't imagine ever working in a place like that. What's a pretty woman like you even doing in that dump?" I blush furiously, anxiously letting my hair fall in my face.
"I finished school a few months ago. There isn't a lot out there for the new members of society." He shakes his head.
"What did you study?" I smile slightly.
"English Lit. I'm hoping to potentially land a gig editing manuscripts. Literally, my dream job is just to sit and read all day." He smirks slightly at me.
"You could be a librarian." I throw my head back and laugh. He pulls onto my road and stops in front of my apartment. The light is on, so I know Christina is home. He stops the car and turns to me.
"Thanks for dealing with him tonight, he's not....usually, like this." I smile softly and glance at Uriah in the back seat.
"It's ok. Thanks for not making me walk home in the snow." He gives me a half smile, making him look even sexier as the moon reflects behind him. Digging in his pocket, he pulls out a small notepad and scribbles something on it.
"If you ever need anyone to stakeout a donut shop for you, or if you ever wanna just go see a movie, let me know." He places his number in my hand, and my face breaks out until a grin I cannot contain.
"Goodnight Tobias. " I open my door, and my feet crunch the snow under my feet. I wave as I close the door, and somehow as I make my way up the steps, I'm certain he's one of those guys who won't leave until I'm safely inside. Unlocking the door, I wave one more time before closing it.
Immediately like the creeper I am. I rush to the window. Sure enough. His car is still parked outside. I see him lean towards the window, and he waves. I wave back and let the curtain fall into place. I can hear his car crush snow as he drives away, and I let out a happy contented sigh.
"What has you so giddy?" Christina asks behind me. I jump, pressing a hand to my chest.
"Jesus! You scared the shit out of me." She laughs, plopping herself down.
"So, who's the hottie who dropped you off today?" I blush, sitting down on the chair opposite her.
"Just some guy I met at the bar. He just wanted to make sure I got home safe since it's snowing." She smirks, nodding at the crumpled up paper in my hand.
"Is that his number?" I somehow feel myself flush even more.
"He was just being friendly, said to call if I ever needed anything." She rolls her eyes
"Yeah, like his di-" I throw a pillow at her head. Standing up quickly I cross the tiny living room so I'm at my bedroom door. I hear her laugh as I roll my eyes.
" Goodnight! We WILL be talking about this tomorrow." I groan internally.
My comforter is soft as I lay down, and I let my aching back relish in the pure bliss of being able to lie down for once. I dig my phone out of my pocket and stare at the crumpled number in my hand.
Tobias
645-1003
My hand shakes with anticipation as I punch in his number. I don't know what I'm expecting o get out of a relationship with him. A friend? A lover? A boyfriend? I quickly type out a text message and don't even think twice before sending it.
Thanks for the ride :) - Tris.
I throw the phone next to me and gather my things so I can take a shower. The bathroom is cluttered with Christina's makeup, and I have to push it all to the side to make room. Quickly brushing my teeth, I strip down and step into the warm cascade of water. For twenty minutes, I allow myself to wash away the dirt and scum of the bar, and the shame of letting Eric walk all over me for a job that barley pays rent.
When the water begins to run cold, I exit the bathroom, wrapping myself in a white towel. After pulling on a pair of fluffy white pj pants and a grey top, I pull my damp hair into a braid. My phone, which has sat on the bed this entire time. A few notifications have popped up. One from mom, one from dad, unknown number....
Wait. I quickly unlock my phone and go to my messages. Sure enough, he's sent me a message.
My pleasure. Let me know if you ever want to grab coffee!
I feel myself internally squeal, and I fall back on my bed completely sated. The night, which has started out horrendous, has come to surprising turn of events and given me somewhat of a happy ending.
I turn of my phone and climb into bed, pulling the covers around me as I try and allow myself to fall asleep. My mind is too filled with anxious thoughts about Tobias. Did he get home alright? Is he thinking of me as often as I am him?
Probably not. I'm just crazy
