it took about three minutes to drive to jensen's. i parked my car and let out a huge sigh.
the more i think about it, the more my gay tendencies have been appearing. also, i'm starting i remember some non-straight things i didn't notice weren't straight until now. for example, on multiple occasions i thought that looking at the men's underwear ads on the computer for a little too long was normal. i just assumed all my friends did it. boy, was i fucking wrong; well, except for frank. he did.
i exited my car and walked into the restaurant rather nervously. i've never been on a gay date before, if that's even what this is. if not, it's just two working pals having drinks together. there's nothing homo here.
as soon as i entered the restaurant, i saw pete sitting at a two-seating table near the front of the location.
"hey, glad you could make it," pete said to me as soon as i walked over to him and sat down.
"you too. how are you?"
"i'm good. you?"
"could be better, but could be worse."
"is something wrong?" he asked in a genuinely concerned tone.
"i know the entirety of this story is probably a lot to handle, but my girlfriend is pregnant."
"well, congrats!" he responded in a less genuine tone than before.
"it's not mine, i never want kids in my life. i just don't think i have the time. it's her ex boyfriend's baby. she had only moved in for about a week before she came to me yesterday and said she's moving in with alex because she's preggers with his baby! it's crazy, man."
"wow. that was...something to take in. i'm sorry, dude."
"no, it's okay. it's probably for the best anyways. we would've never worked out because she wanted kids so badly that she would do anything to get them, whether it involved me or not."
"dang. chicks are crazy, dude."
now we enter the unanticipated awkward silence; well, until i ask a question that will define my whole future with pete.
"so, are you dating anyone in particular? someone as nice-looking as you must be," i asked in a subtly flirtatious tone that i didn't even notice i implied until after the words jumped out of my mouth.
"nah. i just broke up with my boyfriend a few weeks before i got this new job."
"you're gay?"
"yeah, do you have a problem with that?" pete asked in a way too aggressive tone.
"no, definitely not. i actually think i am, too."
"oh. well, that's great! why do you think that?"
"i don't really know myself. i just think i've always been a non-hetero, but never noticed it. you're actually the first person i've told."
"why not tell frank first? you've known him years longer than you've known me."
"i'm not sure. i don't know why, i just feel this trustworthiness when i talk to you. no cliche intended."
"well, that makes me feel a lot better. i didn't want to be that annoying employee that doesn't know if they're even good enough to work for someone with an inch of fame."
"don't worry. you're the best assistant i've had in a while, wentz. welcome to the belleville family."
