Chapter Forty: Ghostly
Her face was waxy. Her eyes sallow, skeleton like. She looked like a living breathing corpse. I felt my heart get kicked every time I looked at my precious baby in the bed. Her beautiful curls only recently been shaved off. It was easier while she was doing chemo therapy. Vic sat next to me, staring at the child asleep. Black bags hung under his eyes, mimicking my own. Bruises lined over her small arms and legs, her lips cracked and dry. She was so strong. I would give anything to have my daughters strength. Her white blood cells were diminishing fast. She had managed to catch pneumonia due to the fact her body wasn't sure how to fight virus's anymore. The doctors were scared they might drop so much her liver may shut down. Slowly her body will shut down until she's gone. The thought made me feel sick. She had so many different fluids and IVs stuck in her, I could barely see my daughter under them. The deafening beep echoed around the chillingly quiet room.
I felt something warm start to rub my knee. I look to see Vic's hand softly tracing my knee. I placed my hand on top of his, linking our fingers together. I leaned over the arm of my chair, resting my head on his shoulder. He turned and pressed a soft kiss to my temple.
"She'll be strong ok. She'll make it through." He murmured against my hair. I closed my eyes, trying to believe his words. It wasn't working in mine or his favor.
"The chances of surviving leukemia are high." He whispered to me. I felt my lip tremble.
"Look at her Vic." I felt him breath out over my hair. I turned to face him, my nose pressed to his throat. He didn't smell great like he usually does, but neither would I. Both of us refuse to leave this room while Annalise was under care. I heard a soft moan and looked to see her softly stir. I sat up straight, leaning forward, with my other hand I grabbed her small cold one. Her big brown eyes opened up. Even in her skeletal frame, her eyes were still her eyes. Even as she decomposed in front of us, she still had her sparkle. I managed to smile at my adoring daughter.
"Hey chook." I said softly. Her cracked lips twitched into a small smile.
"Hi Mama." Her tiny voice was hoarse. I stroked my thumb over the back of her hand softly.
"How are you feeling princess?" Vic asked in a cracking voice. She scrunched her nose up, about to reply before she started violently coughing. I winced with each of her whooping coughs. She little out a little whine when she had finished.
"My chest hurts." She croaked, my chest tightening.
"We'll call the nurse." I reassured her, pressing the call button.
The door burst open, and I expected a nurse, but we were met by Jaime, Tony, Ryan and my mom. Jaime beamed at the young girl in the bed.
"Look who's up. What's going on sunshine?" Her small pearly teeth shone as a grin split her face.
"Uncle Jaime!" She squealed. See what I mean about strong? Two seconds ago she was in pain, yet she was good at hiding it. Renee, her nurse appeared at the door, surprised by the amount of people in the room.
"Did you call?" I quickly nodded, as the others all looked at each other.
"We'll be back in two seconds." Anna looked disappointed. She pouted her tiny lips.
"But you just got here." My mom gave her a warm smile.
"We'll be back as soon as possible pumpkin." She grabbed Ryan's hands, pulling him with her. Renee set to work giving Anna a few different medications she needed, apart from chemo. Her chemo wasn't until another hour away. She seemed worn after her medicine shots, but Renee told her she was a big brave girl, and she'll make sure to get chocolate ice cream for her desert. If she keeps it down that is, but it kept her happy. As soon as Renee left, they all poured in again, minus Ryan. Mom came to stand behind me, lightly squeezing my shoulder. Jaime and Tony moved next to her bed. Jaime sat on the edge of it, gripping her hand, placing a sloppy kiss on the back, causing her to giggle madly. Anna didn't need a clown, or a dog to cheer her up, because she had Jaime. I saw Tony watch the little girl with admiration.
"We brought you a little gift." I noticed the small bag Tony held against his back. He held it out to an eager Anna. She pulled it out, to reveal a little Ana doll, from Frozen. Her eyes widened, and pure joy masked any sign of her sickness. She reached up, ignoring her tubes and hugged Tony.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you." She repeated over and over again. Tony grinned, holding the little girl to him. I held back tears, and looked up at Vic. He flicked a glance at me, giving me a reassuring smile, squeezing my hand.
"She was strong, just like you are." Jaime explained, as she let go of Tony and hugged him instead. She looked down at the doll in her hands in admiration. Her eyes sparked up, as she looked up at Tony.
"Do you think we can cut her hair? She can be just like me." I choked back my surprised noise. My eyes stung more then ever. I saw Tony trying to keep it together.
"Absolutely, as soon as we get scissors ok?" She nodded, smoothing the little manikins dress. She looked up and caught my eyes.
"Mama, look what they got me!" She exclaimed, holding out Ana. I grinned at her.
"That's beautiful, baby." The door then opened to reveal Ryan, Casey with him this time. Anna looked up at them and grinned wickedly at them.
"Uncle Rye, Aunty Cassabear! Tony and Jaime got me an Ana doll." Casey smiled, not missing a beat.
"Well, aren't you a lucky girl." She chortled, walking over, giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"We're gonna get rid of her hair, so she's just like me." I saw Casey eyed me in the corner of her vision.
"That's a fantastic idea." Ryan had pulled a chair, and now sat beside Tony, who gave up and sat on the ground. Jaime still perched on the other side of her bed, while mom sat by the window. I know it was hard for her. Apart from Anna's actual birth, the last time we were here, was when dad passed away.
"Hey Cassabear, could I wear my Ana dress when I'm your flower girl?" I felt Vic stiffen next to me, and I saw Casey freeze. She reached out, cupping Anna's face with her hand.
"Honey, at my wedding you can wear whatever you want." Anna giggled.
"What if I wore pajamas?" Casey softly laughed.
"Even pajamas." I smiled slowly at the scene in front of me. I leaned back over, snuggling into the crook of Vic's neck once again. His warmth calming me as I watched Anna laugh and smile. I had a small spark of hope as I watched her interact, as if we sat in the backyard having a barbecue. I was just praying, her positivity is why pulls, not only her, but all of us through this.
