Taehyung had expected Naeun's case to be quiet hard for him. He loved working with children but at the same time, he hated when things went wrong. Taehyung was alone in this, and he wasn't a superhero, far from that actually. He wished he could look into children's eyes and promise them that he will give them a life they could never have imagined, but he could never bring himself to promise that anymore. Many times he failed to keep that promise, and no matter how many times Jin would explain to him that it was nature and fate doing their duty, Taehyung believed he played a role in the result of it all. Weather they pulled through or not.
Which was also why Seokjin believed that he couldn't leave Taehyung alone in this, and he was going to need specialist help with Naeun too. The first person that came to his mind was Jo Sooah. She was a cardiac surgeon, very popular in her sector. She mainly dealt with older people, but Jin could proudly say that she was amazing around kids. He had asked why she wasn't a pediatrician, and her statement was always the same. "For older people, you know their time will come soon, and its easier to deal with the pain. But those kids are loosing their whole life, that they haven't even had a glimpse of. I couldn't possibly deal with the guilt of letting them down."
But when Jin mentioned the case of Naeun to Sooah, she was more hesitant than usual. Of course as a doctor she felt the need to never reject a patient, but she always declined any sort of research work, where the child's life depended on her. Sooah only ever agreed to do scans and regular check ups and that was her limit. Maybe it was the desperation in Jin's eyes, or something about the little girl that had hit home for Sooah, but she had agreed after a minute of silence. Naeun had been assigned her own special room, which Jin offered Jimin for free, seeing as he couldn't keep himself healthy in the process of trying to help his daughter. "You need to make sure you're healthy and living before you encourage Naeun to keep going." Seokjin had told him when Jimin refused to take the room for free, but understood that he had to stay strong for the little girl.
Naeun laid peacefully in her bed, which was decorated with yellow linen and the sun slightly shining past the animal curtains the nurses had hung up. Her skin was pale, and her lips were chapped as little bits of dried skin hung off of her plump lips. Taehyung couldn't watcher her suffer, so he agreed to meet his co-worker, and start the research immediately. Sooah knocked softly on his office door, and after hearing a confirmation, she pushed the heavy door open and her eyes found him. His eyes bore into a picture frame, as his thoughts ate away at his conscious, slowly forgetting that a stranger had entered his room.
"Mr Kim?" Sooah's voice broke him away from his daydream, and his eyes glanced up at her. To say that he was mesmerized was exaggerated, but something in him seemed to have made his heart race at the sight of her. It wasn't love at first sight, yet Taehyung would not forget the subtle lip biting, possibly from nervousness, the doe eyes which looked into his and the soft looking brown hair which grew past her shoulders like a velvety blanket. "Yes, sorry." Taehyung put down the picture frame, and with one hand gesture he invited her to sit down on a chair opposite his desk. "I'm Doctor Kim Taehyung, but please call me Taehyung." He smiled, his eyes lighting up when a slight smile unfolded from her silky lips. "Okay, Taehyung. I'm Jo Sooah, cardiac surgeon." Her voice was music to his ears and Taehyung failed to stay concentrated in that one moment, and frankly so did Sooah.
"Is it okay to call you informally?" Taehyung lowered his head, his lashes casting shadows on his cheeks as a genuine smile for once covered his face. But deep down, he had hoped that Jo Sooah would help Taehyung keep his promise to Naeun, and that together they could save another life. She nodded, before taking out a file from her bag and displaying it in front of Taehyung. "So I had a look at all the tests that had been carried out on Naeun. All the blood tests turn out negative and many hereditary and genetic diseases had been justified." Taehyung nodded, scanning over Sooah's notes with determination. "I believe if we ran the regular checkup tests again, we could see if we can find any anomalies, or any certain patterns. I would also suggest doing an echocardiogram."
"Why would we need to do that? Echocardiograms are only ran as a way to prove a theory, we couldn't possibly name the disease from only seeing the normalities and abnormalities of her heart." Taehyung's eyes narrowed, as he thought deeply about Sooah's suggestion. He had no objection, as anything could help Naeun at the moment. But he felt like only looking at an echo of her heart couldn't possibly diagnose her. Sooah nodded, as if she had expected that reaction form him already. Some might call her inexperienced, and many times in her previous job, she was declined from working with children. Sooah could never run her theories or even prove them, and sometimes she wondered if she had pushed on, could she have saved a life?
So this time she wouldn't back down. "It will not diagnose her, but if I can print of the echo and compare it with an echo of different cases of different heart disorders, we could possibly find a match." As much as he had his doubts, Taehyung want to for once put his trust into someone. If Jo Sooah had been a bad person, Seokjin wouldn't have sent her over to save a life of his best friends child. And Taehyung also got a certain vibe from her, like an aura that radiated off of her. He knew ever human had a story, and hers seemed to peak from behind the guard she was putting up, but not long before she came back to her senses and hid herself again.
And that was how the rest of the night was spent. Taehyung admiring how smoothly her words rolled off of her tongue, and how medical science was like tying shoelaces to her. Taehyung for once saw hope at the end of a dark tunnel of doubt, and he hoped that at the end of all of this, he could finally move past his own misery.
