Ellington's POV

My feeble hand gently glides across my wife's soft skin as I stare out the window.   Moonlight shines against every surface outside, making me wish it would shine on me.  All though we've only been in the jailhouse for six days, it feels like it's been an eternity.  Oh how I long to feel the warm summer night air on my skin!  It's seriously like a freezer in here, despite our orange jumpsuits.  I feel Rydel shiver in my arms and I pull her closer, knowing that it is my job to keep her warm.

Once she is in a deep sleep, I get up to stretch my legs.  The first place I go is to the window, where a warm breeze blows all of the cold air off of me.  I grasp two of the bars and stick my nose through the space between them, breathing in the fresh outside air.  I rest my head against the bars, hoping for more warmth to come to me.

To my surprise, when I press my head against the bars, they both fall forward into the yard.  My eyes widen at this new discovery.  Without thinking, I push the rest of the bars out into the yard and stare out into the night.  We're free.

"Rydel," I whisper loudly as I rush over to her and shake her awake.

"Rydel, we gotta go," I whisper urgently as I pull her out of bed.  I help her through the window before jumping through myself.  I quietly drag her around to the front yard and slip through the gate when the alarm goes off.

"Run!" I scream as I dash off.  The confused Rydel follows me into an open field as sirens and flashing lights chase us.  At the end of the field, I can see a thick forest where Rydel and I would be safe.  I grab her wrist as I run with all of my might towards the trees.  The police cars are quickly gaining on us, moving faster than we could ever run.  Sooner than I could imagine, Rydel and I are in a circle of police cars.  Police men come out from each side of the car, all pointing guns at us.

"Put your hands up!" One with a mega phone screams.  I swing my head around to see an empty gap in two police cars, and I run towards it.  When I look behind me, I see Rydel being handcuffed as she watches me in horror.

Suddenly, she shakes the cop off of herself and runs towards me. She takes my hand and we run into the night, until we hear gunshots.  I look over at Rydel and pounce on her, fearing that she might get shot.  We roll onto the grass as bullet fly over our heads.  Once they stop firing, I pick Rydel up and carry her into the trees.  I weave my way around them stealthily as the flashing lights get farther behind us.  Once I can no longer see the lights, I sit down against a tree, Rydel on my lap.

"Are you crazy?" she shrieks, out of breath.

"Yes," I breath.

"We could have died!" she exclaims.

"We would have rotted in prison anyway.  But we're free now, that's all that matters," I state, still trying to catch my breath.

"But we didn't kill Ryland!  They could have found out we're innocent," she whimpers as she begins to cry.

"Wouldn't you rather just go to Wisconsin without all of this trial bullshit?" I sigh.

"I'd rather not be wanted by the police!" she exclaims.

"In a few weeks, they won't even know who we are.  We'll change our appearances completely and our names and we'll live the happy life together that we've always wanted to live," I assure her.

"I can't live a happy life knowing my baby brother is dead," she weeps.

"Babe, I know it's hard now, but it'll be ok, I promise," I whisper before gently pressing my lips against hers.  I break the kiss once I hear footsteps.
