Ellington's POV
Nothing in life is easy. Over the past week, I've come to realize just that. When I ran away with Rydel, I had expected to simply marry her and then fly to Wisconsin. It should have been as simple as that. But no, life just had to throw a curveball at us. Even though running away was wrong, our punishment shouldn't have been this extreme. Rydel and I had to go to jail, shaken and scared, only to find out that Ryland had been killed. We had to suffer in that cell and deal with our grief, knowing that we were being held responsible for this terrible crime. Karma has punished us enough for our entire lives. All we can do now is hope that we finally get our happy ending.
"That'll be twenty-five dollars, please," the cab driver says, breaking me out of my thought. I reach my hand into my pocket and dig out twenty-five dollars cash. I hand him his money and help Rydel out of the car. We walk through the airport and wait in the painfully long line in silence. A half hour goes by, and we are finally in the front.
"Hi, can we get two tickets to Milwaukee?" I ask nicely.
"ID please," the lady at the desk groans.
"Um, I don't have my ID," I sigh as I wrap my arm around Rydel.
"Then you're not getting tickets. Next!" the lady shouts.
"Ma'am, you don't understand. We need these tickets!" I beg.
"Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave or I'll call security," she threatens.
"Ok ok, we're leaving," I sigh as I walk out of line, holding Rydel close.
"Now what?" she whispers.
"Go to another terminal and try again?" I suggest.
"Ok. This better work," she whimpers. We walk over to the next terminal and wait in another painfully long line. When we get to the front, another half hour has gone by. This time, I dig out all of the cash I have in my pockets and slam it down in front of the lady at the desk.
"Look, we got mugged and we don't have our IDs. Can you please just get us two tickets for the next flight to Milwaukee?" I sigh.
"I'm sorry Sir, I can't sell you tickets unless you have your IDs," the lady states.
"I know, but we got mugged and we have to get home. This is all of the money we have! We need these tickets. Please, ma'am," I beg.
"I'm really sorry," she apologizes. With a groan, I grab our money walk out of the line with Rydel following close behind me.
"Have you got any ideas?" I ask her when we get outside.
"Yeah. Play along," she instructs as she drags me to the next terminal. When we get in line, Rydel starts to cry. I pretend to comfort her until we get to the front of the line. The lady behind the counter looks at Rydel with surprise as she takes our money from me. Rydel gently places it on the counter and pretends to collect herself.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but we don't have anything but that. You see, I just found out I'm pregnant and we have to get to Milwaukee to get away from my abusive father. If he finds us, he'll be so upset. Please help us," Rydel whimpers.
"I'm sorry, but I'm going to need some type of ID," she says softly.
"We don't have ID, we just have this money. Please, ma'am," I beg.
"I'm so sorry. I can call the police, if you want," she offers.
"No, that'll just make him angrier," Rydel whines.
