"What's up, baby mama," Dondre gave me a head nod, "I thought you forgot about a young king." I ruffled the bleached blonde curls that sat on top of his head, paring nicely with his faded taper, "I couldn't never forget about you.""If you didn't forget about me why aren't you wearing a jersey with my number on it," he gave me the side eye. "I promise I'll have a jersey with your name and number on it the next time." He smiled, "I'ma hold you to that. Don't go breaking my heart, love." E only shook his head and I laughed, "I would never," I held out my pinky and he locked it with his.
Dondre turned to Elijah, "E, let me hold something. I need to re-up on my candy. The homies from school been asking where the candy is and I'm like bruh, I ain't got no money. Help me out, G. I'm trying to get this money so I can take my lady here," he motioned towards me, "to McDonald's." Dondre turned to me, "everything is on me ya heard? You don't even have to eat from the dollar menu. You can get a value meal."
I burst out laughing. This kid is seriously something else. Elijah's stern voice cut in, "don't ask me for anything else until you bring me a progress report. The last time that I saw you, you told me I would see it today. You don't have it in your hand so I take it that you don't have it at all." Dondre frowned up and smacked his lips, "man, my moms or granny don't care about my progress note."
"Do I look like your fucking mother? Nothing in this world is just given to you. You have to earn it. All I'm asking you for is a progress report with decent grades. That's not asking much. When you can get right and handle your business, then you can come see me about some money. Go get on the court."
Dondre's face saddened but he only said "yes, sir" nodded and walked off with his head held high. I headed to the top of the bleachers and chose a secluded spot in the corner."
Once we sat down, E handed me the hotdog he was carrying for me. "You like extra ketchup and chili right?" He asked. "Yes, thank you," I smiled. I took a bite into the hotdog and watched as the cheerleaders began their set to kick off the game. I looked over at E, "Nina is five. Does she cheer or dance?"
"Softball," he pulled his slushee from the straw, "she's been playing since she was three."
"Oh yeah? Did you influence that?" I picked at him. He smiled and shook his head, "it's the sport she likes the most so far. She tried cheerleading a few months ago but didn't care for it. That was surprising considering she's so prissy. We put her in little TaeKwonDo and she said it smelled like feet, so she didn't want to go back." I burst out laughing. "She said she's going to try out basketball next year. She always surprises me so we'll see how that goes."
