I pulled into the parking lot of my doctors office and shut off the engine to the car. Elijah and I were supposed to have left for Paris on Monday but Nina's mother had to make an unexpected trip out of town and Nina has been staying with E up until today. I'm relieved that this unforeseen event happened because I wasn't able to move my appointment up any sooner than it was set to get get my birth control.
I signed in with the receptionist and took a seat in the lobby. I pulled out my phone and began scrolling through Mediatakeout while I waited for my name to be called. I was reading the recent tea on Kris and Bruce Jenner's split and the speculation that he has decided to live his life as a woman when my mom's name popped up on the screen. I answered the call and brung the phone to my ear, "hello?"
"Hey, sweetheart. Have you already left?"
"No, not yet. Everything okay?" I told my mom that I was going to Paris for work. I wouldn't say that I lied to her because technically, I am working.
"Everything is fine. Your father and I just wanted to call and wish you safe travels. You make sure you call us when you land."
"I will. Love y'all."
"We love you, too. Talk to you soon." I ended the call and while I was putting my phone in my purse, a nurse had come out and called my name.
I stood up and politely smiled at the nurse before following behind her. She took me into the triage area where she took my weight and checked my blood pressure. She spoke while typing my information on her iPad, "okay so you had your annual check up in March." She scrolled on the iPad and looked up at me, "we're here for birth control, correct?"
"Yes, please." She nodded and sat the iPad on the counter. "I'm going to give you a pregnancy test to make sure there's no surprise in there. Once we get the results you and Dr. Pedro can go over the different types of birth control. Sounds good?"
"Sounds good." She got up from the stool and walked over to the cabinet. She pulled out a ziplock bag that contained an urine cup. She handed me the cup, "the bathroom is the first door on the left once you exit this room. I nodded and took the cup into the bathroom. I squatted over the toilet bowl and peed into the cup. My mind wandered to when I had first taken a test in the bathroom of my apartment and found out that I was pregnant. He or she would've been two years old. I finished peeing and placed the lid on top of the urine sample before reaching for a sanitary wipe to clean myself.
I handed the nurse the sample and she placed a label with my name on it. "I'm going to go ahead and run the test and then Dr. Pedro will be in shortly," she smiled and walked off. Five to ten minutes passed before there was a knock at the door followed by the entrance of Dr. Pedro.
