"You still haven't RSVP'd for the wedding," Onika filled her coffee mug with green tea. "Are you not coming?" I leaned back against the counter and watched as she added sugar, "I plan on sliding through the reception. Does that take care of my RSVP?" She looked over at me and brung her brows in, "you're not coming to the ceremony?"
"Nah. That moment is for you and him."
"Your daughter is the flower girl. You being there represents a lot. Even though we are no longer together, we haven't missed a beat when it comes to raising our daughter together amicably, Xavier included."
"I get that, I just don't feel like it's my place to be at the ceremony. I believe that such an intimate moment should be shared between the two of you and your close friends and family."
"Oh, so we're not friends and family?" I shook my head and tittered, "you know what I mean. It's all love which is why I'm coming to the reception. Let that be enough, yeah?" She rolled her eyes, "whatever you say, Ermias." She called me by my middle name, something she would do when she was vexed with me. "Have you thought about what we were talking about last week?" She asked.
I nodded, "I have and I don't like the thought of my child living in a state different than mine. I don't think I ever will, not even when she gets older and decides to go off on her own. But, you're right. This is the reality of broken families and I'm the only person to blame for that. I respect your decision and I support you and the union you're about to endeavor in." She gave a small smile, "do you regret it?" I cocked my head to the side, "regret what?"
"The way that things turned out with us." I squinted my eyes, taken aback by the question. "You gave me the greatest gift I could ever receive and for that I could never regret anything when it comes to the relationship we had. We needed things to go down the way that they did. You had to learn you deserved to be loved properly while I had to learn how to love properly. So, no. I don't regret it. I just wish I didn't have to hurt you to find me. Why? You missing a nigga?" I joked.
"You must be out your rabbit ass mind," she laughed. "All jokes aside though, whoever gets the best of you is going to be one happy woman." Nyla immediately came into mind. I'm usually so weary of who I let in, but with her it comes so naturally. I fit every opening that she has, far deeper than her physical. That woman was molded to fit me, the beauty to the beast that lies within me. I leaned off the counter and pulled my pants up, "about that happy woman. I want to introduce you and Nina to someone." She tilted her head, her eyes widened in shock, "oh really," she grinned. "It must be serious."
