"How do you mean Kress is dead?"
I rake my hair in frustration and let out a sigh. "He was shot at the office and our transfer papers were wiped off the computer. Every information have been wiped off, meaning-"
"You can't leave today," Zane completed my statement, leaning to the wall frustrated. "Can't you get another person?"
"It'll be months before another person is assigned to us,"
I walk towards Zane, my back turned to him as he holds me close. "Ed seems smart and he's doing this because he's tired of running around with you. He wants to end the game,"
He turns me and I'm facing him. "Nothing will happen to you. I promise," he kisses the back of my hands.
James' call comes in and Zane excuses himself. I'm left standing, thinking of what that maniac wants and the reason he's so keen on killing me.
The feud is between my dad and him. How am I involved? How do I fit into his game plan?
Questions I'm not sure I ever thought about till today.
"Hey you okay?" Zane asks. Truth is, I'm not sure I am so I nod my head.
"So why did James call?"
"He said we should have sometime together as friends. He said we should come for dinner today. It's nine. So do you want to go so I could tell him we had plans,"
"Tell him we'll see him by six,"
"Are you sure?" he asked in disbelieving tone.
"Yeah. I need some fresh air,"
"I'll tell him that right away," he said, pulling his phone out to call James.
"Look at my two love birds," Ellie squealed, pulling me for a really tight hug. And by tight hug, the type that actually cuts off your oxygen flow. I finally get myself out of her hug and give her a smile. "What's been going on? Ditching school lately for you know what-"
"Gross!" I and Zane say in unison. I sit by Zane when Darren and James walks in together.
"Hey guys," they say together and we all reply back.
"This looks nice," I say to James, taking a second look at the restaurant. The interior looks elegant as it did outside. The chandelier hanging in the middle of the restaurant adds that exquisite look to it.
"This is just one of many. My father owns this. Everything is on me tonight," James said smiling. His gaze flicked between I and Zane. " What have you two love birds been up to?"
"Nothing much but trying to adore my baby girl," Zane said, raising our intertwined hands and kissing the back of mine. The table got some 'oh's' but nothing uncomfortable.
"Mr Roberts, how may I help you today?" a waitress stood before us. Her black hair pulled into a messy bun and that blue long sleeve gown hugs her body in the right places, showing off her nice physique.
"Monique, nice to meet you once again. I'll have the veggie salad and a bottle of iced water," he stares at her as she takes the notes down. He turns to us, "And what would you guys like?"
Ellie asked for bacon broccoli rice, Darren was a burgers and fries, Zane was spaghetti while mine was just a chicken corn stir fry.
"Your food will be ready in the next ten minutes," Monique said before leaving us.
"Any deep stuff going on lately?" Darren asked.
"Nothing like that" I retorted, smacking his hand across the table.
"So? Nothing yet. No kisses," Ellie said in a disappointed tone.
"Only on the forehead, if that counts," Zane said sheepishly.
"No it doesn't Mr Newman. When are we going to see more of that?"
"We have no idea. Just taking our time," I say with a smirk on my face, making Ellie huff.
"Let's have a sleepover at my place tomorrow. We will see how slow you wanna take it,"
Did my best friend just tell me that? I gulp, thinking of what this sick little lady had in mind.
"What time?" Darren asked.
"9"
"Okay then. Here are your meals," Monique's voice boomed, serving us.
Eating, makes me realise that I and Zane haven't eaten anything today. I smile at him. There's spaghetti sauce all over his mouth. I think he's doing it on purpose. Let me play the observing yet unsuspecting girlfriend. I pick up a napkin and begin to wipe his mouth. He chuckles under the napkin.
"I thought I'd have to ask you," he chuckles.
"But you didn't-"
"And that's why you'll be my baby girl..."
I and Zane are too close to calling it a safe distance. I'm staring into his eyes and whatever is going through his mind is something I just can't understand.
"Can you guys hold it up till tomorrow because you all are spoiling the joy ahead," Ellie states angrily. I and Zane look at each other. I think we all get that whatever is in the little girl's mind is gonna be crazy.
Sorry this coming late but a happy new year to you all. I'd been trying to get this right since James, Ellie and Darren were not to active in the previous chapters. I hate writer blocks...
