Niall
Once we get to Jerry's I swear I could feel a headache coming. The music was so loud the entire car ride, the loudest I ever heard music be played, besides when I'm at a party. But, the only difference is that in a party, it's outside so the loud music is bearable, but when in a car with all the windows up, it's, I don't even have a word to describe it. I don't know how I'll get used to this, but hopefully I do soon.Once Cole finds a parking spot, I thank the lord when the car turns off along with the ear crushing music. I let out a sigh that I didn't know I was holding in and sit up in my seat. I look around the parking lot, there's a fair amount of cars considering that it's one in the afternoon. Jerry's usually gets pack after five o'clock, but today, I guess, is different.
"You survived." Harry chuckles at me and I roll my eyes, detaching my hands from his to fix my hair.
Ignoring his remark, I look at Cole and Jack who are having a conversation of their own, but I quickly look away not wanting to be rude. I read online about the do's and don'ts of the Deaf Community and looking into other signers conversation when you know ASL is one of the don'ts. So is talking around people who are deaf or hard of hearing, it's rude.
"Why are you talking? Isn't it considered rude?" I sign to Harry, who continues to look into my eyes, not once glancing at my hands. That's one of the do's. When someone is signing you're suppose to look at their hands from your peripheral vision, not just stare at their hands, it makes the signer nervous or uncomfortable. Eye contact is key in a conversation. I still have a habit of staring at Jack's, Harry's, and now Cole's hands when they sign and I need to stop. I need to get onto Harry's level because not once did he look at my hands, that's fucking impressive.
"What are you talking about?" He now signs and I groan because I want to explain to him what I mean, but I don't know enough signs to do so.
I shake my head, "Nothing."
"No you bought it up, now tell me what you mean." He speaks and signs at the same time. At least he's signing.
"I don't know how to explain it without talking, so just leave it."
He looks at me before reaching into his back pocket. He brings out his phone and I look at him curiously before he hands me his phone that is open up to the 'notes' app. "Since you're so against talking right now, type it."
Why didn't I think of that? I grab his phone and begin to type everything I read online about how it's rude to peak into other signers conversation while knowing ASL and how it's rude to speak in front of people who are deaf or hard of hearing. There's more, but those are the only ones that are relevant right now, other than me staring about peoples hands when they sign. I don't find the need to tell him about that one because that's my problem and he's a professional at it.
I give him his phone back and immediately he begins to read it, his brows scrunched together the whole time.
I see a hand being waved at us in the corner of my eye. Both Harry and I look up seeing that the hand belongs to Jack, "Let's start heading inside?" He suggest and as I'm about to nod my fist, Harry cuts me off, "You guys go, we'll catch up." He signs to Jack and Jack's eyes meet mine in a way to ask me if it's okay with me and I nod my fist, "yeah we'll meet you guys inside." Jack sighs and then nods at us, before turning to Cole, signaling him to go and quickly they both get out of the car, slamming the doors behind them.
"Where did you read these?" Harry immediately breaks the silence.
"Why are they wrong?" I worry, what if they are wrong. Oh my god, I'm so stupid.
