Glossary

Body markings & coat colors:

Coronet: Small amount of white around the edge of the hoof

Half pastern: White stopping just below heel

Sock: White going up just above the heel

Stocking: White going op to the horse's "knee"

Pure Black: Completely black coat

Bay: Dark brown coat with black on lower legs, mane, and tail

Chestnut: Bright ginger coat

Buckskin: Light tan coat, with black or dark brown legs, mane, and tail

Palimino: Light blonde coat, with white mane and tail, and light colored lower legs

Dun: Like bay, but lighter brown coat and medium brown legs, mane, and tail.

Dappled grey: Light grey, with white or darker grey spots

Facial markings:

Star: Star shaped white mark on forehead

Snip: Snip of white on muzzle between the nostrils

Stripe: Stripe of white down the middle of the face

Blaze: Thick stripe of white down the middle of the face

Bald face: Almost completely white head

Interrupted stripe: Stripe down face with several spots missing

Terms used:

Foal: Baby horse

Filly: Not yet mature female horse

Colt: Not yet mature male horse

Mare: Female horse old enough to have a foal

Gelding: Male horse not used for breeding

Stallion: Older, mature male horse, usually leaders of herds

Stud: Stallion used for breeding
