C H A P T E R F I V E
By the third week of school, it's clear that everyone knows.
Or at least they think they know. Caiden has stopped trying to hide our budding friendship -- that is, if he was ever trying to hide it before. Now, when he catches me in the halls, he stops to talk to me. The first time, I was so surprised that I completely blanked out on half of our conversation.
At lunch, he openly waves in greeting and even stops by my lunch table to chat sometimes (to Elise's smug satisfaction). I also no longer have to hide the fact we leave together after school half the time.
Caiden has even managed to switch his assigned seat in our 3rd period. Mrs. Kim is usually rather strict with the seating arrangement, but when golden boy Caiden Haas kindly asks to move seats for just this one time (cue the dreamy sighs), even Mrs. Kim couldn't say no.
Of course, what the student body thinks they know is that Caiden and I are simply friends. This is true on some levels, but Elise has also reported that there's a good quarter of students who think Caiden and I are secretly dating behind Autumn's back.
The truth is that Caiden and I are partners. We're connected by our secrets, by our fears and our power. We're connected by our curses or our gifts -- depending on which one of us you ask.
That's what matters.
The rest of it is. . . subjective.
