Caiden is picking at his bandage

Caiden is picking at his bandage.

It's quiet here, where Caiden and I wait in the apartment. We stand by the door; Mia and Rhett went off to his room to talk really quickly. At least that's what Mia told us when she asked us to hang behind for just a minute.

I reach out to catch Caiden's hand.

He looks up at me instinctively, startled out of his thoughts, but at the hard look in his eyes, I pull away.

"It's almost healed," Caiden murmurs quietly, turning his hand this way and that. He's right; he only has one large bandage patched lengthwise on the back of his hand. Other than that, he's fully recovered.

I hum in answer. Mia's and Rhett's muffled voices float from down the hall to swirl around us. I wonder what they're talking about, and I have half a mind to go find out, but then Caiden sighs.

When I meet his gaze, his eyes are soft, the golden hue melted. "I just want to know why. Why she's doing it. What she wants with me. With any of us, really."

I shrug even as something twists in my gut. "Does she need a reason?" I mutter, though I wonder too.

"She's already killed hundreds of us, Noah. Hundreds. . . " Caiden shakes his head slowly. "What kind of person. . . ?"

Cold disgust slithers through my blood. "A psychopath."

"But she doesn't seem it -- Kaia." Caiden's smile is almost amused. "Not at all. . ."

yes, she does, I think, but I don't say the words. Just like Rhett, from the moment I met Kaia -- even spotting her halfway across the cafeteria -- I knew something was off about her. I knew she was bad news, and I was right. But, just like Rhett, I didn't do anything about it, and now I was paying the price. Rhett failed Jayesh, and I failed Autumn.

And for more than two years, Kaia has killed every Elemental she's come across. Robbed them of their talents and left them for dead. She has to know -- that we can't live without our abilities. I'm sure of it. Kaia knows, but she just doesn't care.
