By lunch on Tuesday, it seems that everyone has forgotten about my canoodling scandal with both Caiden and Kade.

I go unnoticed at lunch -- at least at first. I get through the penne pasta line unscathed, but it's as I'm walking across the cafeteria to my lunch table that I I notice Caiden. He's sitting off to the far right, surrounded by his friends and the rest of the soccer (and then football) jocks.

In this moment, however, he's an island in a furious sea. Amidst the commotion around him, screams, food pranks, conversations and all, he's abandoned the scene to look my way. In his eyes are a secret, a promise, that only we know of.

He smiles, softly, barely, and it's hard not to return the expression.

Yet, Caiden Haas cannot go unnoticed for long. As I finally reach my table, where Elise takes a break from fighting with her milk carton to greet me, Kade Kelley looks up from beside Caiden. Unlike his best friend, Kade is standing behind their lunch table, one leg perched on the sitting bench as he leans forward.

He fixes his questioning gaze first on Caiden, and then on what Caiden is looking at. . . which just happens to be me. I quickly break eye contact with Caiden, right as I watch Kade clap him on the shoulder. But it seems I've jumped out of the frying pan only to head right into the fire.

"You and Caiden?" Elise's expression is thoroughly confused, but not unkind.

I force laughter. "I told you, we have class together."

I'm referring to the texts I sent Elise the day before. My explanation pretty much mirrored what I told Autumn, although my reasons for keeping my secrets close to the vest are different.

"It's a bit crazy, don't you think?" Elise gives up on her milk carton to take a bite of her apple. "Both Kade Kelley and Caiden Haas taking an interest in you on the first day of our senior year?"

I reach over to help Elise with her milk carton. She smiles in appreciation before hiking her apple into the air.

"It's about time, Noah! Don't you see? It might have taken them a century and a half, but those idiots are finally realizing that the better twin was right here all along!"
