The book won't open.
I pry and poke at it, struggle with the gold ornate lock, but it just won't budge. Nothing seems to be working, and as the party mills on just down the hall, I start to turn anxious. I don't have much time left – I've probably already been gone longer than I should be.
Pure frustrations churns in my blood, stirring the storm in my chest to life and almost subconsciously, the frost awakens. The ice surges to the surface, but I quickly realize what is happening and rein myself in.
At the same time, the book in my lap seems to. . . jolt.
And when I try the lock again, it opens.
I waste no time. I flip through the journal, met first by a couple blank and illegible, indecipherable pages. I move further in, confused by the words and phrases in front of me. There must be hundreds of names in here.
It's a ledger, I realize. Kaia's. . . tracking people?
I'm more than halfway through when it finally clicks.
