"Noah."
Kade Kelley nudges me with the eraser end of his pencil as he sings my name.
"Focus on your paper, Kelley."
"But. . . Noah."
"Quit it."
"Noah."
I drop my pen. "I'll call her over here if you want me to," I warn, my gaze flickering over to Miss Adeyemi.
Kade's expression is mocking. "You wound me, Noah."
"Shut up, Kade."
I just need the bell to ring. I block Kade out, hoping he'll leave me alone for once.
"So what's up with you and Haas?"
The question is a far cry from his annoying ribbing. It surprises me -- enough for me to hesitate.
I raise an eyebrow, peering at Kade from beneath my lashes. "Why don't you ask your BFF?"
"He's being. . . surprisingly slippery about it all. I mean, I get it if you two are trying to hide your relationship from Autumn. . ."
He says it casually, but I roll my eyes. "We're not dating, Kade."
He laughs. "You don't have to lie to me, Noah." The statement only borders on taunting.
"I'm serious." I pause. "But why do you care?"
Kade's expression is unreadable, and I almost think I've done it, but after a beat, Kade opens his mouth to answer.
"Kelley!" Miss Adeyemi snaps, slapping a small hand on Kade's desk as she walks through the classroom. "Finish your assignment."
I smirk, eyes flickering between Kade's exasperated face and my worksheet. Like always, Miss Adeyemi is here to cut Kade off, but I'm not sure whether she worked in my favor this time or not.
