"Here you go." Kade Kelley sets down two small cups of ice and a can of Coke before slipping into his seat beside me.
"Thanks," I remark quietly, my fingers tracing the rim of one of the hard plastic cups.
We've been sitting alone at the Annual for over fifteen minutes. Silence stretches between us, but I'm not sure who's to blame; from what I can tell, Kade looks as uncomfortable as I feel. Yet, I'm not sure what the root of his embarrassment is.
Mine is the hoard of students dancing across Elysian's gymnasium floor.
Suddenly, I catch a flash of iridescent green in the crowd. Just as quickly, Elise and River come into view, and I notice the latter is dressed as none other than Peter Pan -- tights and all -- to go along with his fairy date.
Elise seems to feel my eyes on her because she turns to find me. River follows her gaze and the two wave cheerfully once they spot me and Kade.
come on, Elise mouths, beckoning me out onto the dance floor, but I wave a hand and give her a weak smile.
later, i mouth back.
Elise pouts before she disappears from view, and then it's just me and Kade once again.
"So. . . what's up?"
I turn to find Kade studying me, his drink obscuring his mouth.
I shrug. "Uh. . . nothing. I just. . . don't feel good." The lie comes almost naturally -- anything is better than explaining to Kade that I have a chronic lack of rhythm.
He leans in, his face close to mine, and looks out onto the floor. "I'll tell you a secret, Noah. If you want me to."
Falling still, I nod, aware of Kade's proximity. "Shoot."
