I open the front door before Elise can even ring it.

Immediately, I notice she's already dressed in her costume for the Annual. "Tinkerbell?" Her leafy green dress falls mid-thigh, and she's wearing a pair of translucent tights that are tucked effortlessly into green flats. Elise and her mom even went the extra mile; there are pompoms and tiny bells fixed to her shoes.

"But brunette." Elise shrugs, gesturing to her hair. "I said no to the blonde wig."

Even so, she looks stunning. Her makeup is light and iridescent, gold and silver flecks catching the light as she steps into the house.

When I say as much -- that Elise looks gorgeous -- she blushes. "I know," she murmurs teasingly. "Now, let's get you ready too!"

Without further ado, Elise books it up the stairs, and I'm quick to follow after. We settle in my bedroom, and I close the door behind us.

"No peeking!" She insists, draping the garment bag she's brought across my bed. "Go curl your hair first, while I make the final touches." And with that, Elise banishes me to the bathroom.

I wash my face as the curling wand warms, and then I get to work. It doesn't take long; my hair is still only shoulder length since I cut it a couple of months ago, and I decide to leave my bangs as is for now.

When I open the door to my bedroom, Elise is hunched over a dress. Even from afar, I can tell it's longer than hers, the blue and opal fabrics shimmering in the light. It almost looks like silk, and for a second, I'm stunned by the sheer craftsmanship.

Even partly obscured, I take note of miniature jewels and diamonds woven into the fabrics. They're almost undetectable, yet they seem to make all the difference.

When Elise ultimately notices me standing in the doorway, she steps back from the bed, crossing her arms. "Well, I was gonna do a big reveal, but I guess not."

"It's beautiful, Elise." My voice is soft, and I know that my eyes are still wide with awe.

"You haven't even seen it on, yet."
